I’m reposting this reel from six months ago to address safety within newborn photography.

I recently came across a behind-the-scenes reel where a baby was actually hanging from deer antlers, 2–3 feet above the ground. Yes, Dad’s hand was on the baby’s bottom, but there was no head support and nothing underneath to protect the baby in the event of a fall.

A baby’s head is the heaviest part of their body, meaning they would likely hit head-first if they fell. The consequences could be detrimental. A baby’s safety should never be put at risk for an image—under any circumstance.
This type of image can 100% be achieved safely without actually hanging the baby from the deer. Yes, it may require more Photoshop work, but the baby remains unharmed.
I have always prided myself and my business on putting babies’ safety first.

What worries me most is that newer photographers may see content like this, assume it is how these images are created, and attempt it themselves. It’s okay until it isn’t. It only takes one time.

A few top safety rules every newborn photographer should always follow:

#1 Never suspend a baby above a surface. Always use a spotter and protect the baby’s head.

#2 Advanced poses should always be done as composites, with hands on the baby at all times and removed in Photoshop afterward.

#3 Always protect the baby’s airway.

A gorgeous night spent with one of the sweetest families.

When the baby is celebrating her 1st birthday with a smash cake, the older siblings get to join in the fun as well and enjoy the yummy cake.

It is genuinely amazing getting to be a part of families from the very beginning.

For Austin and Alycia, I’ve had the joy of capturing so many of their most special moments — from their engagement and wedding, to welcoming their first daughter, and then their second.

And now, I get to document another beautiful milestone: celebrating their youngest daughter’s 1st birthday!

Being invited back to capture these moments as a family grows is something I’ll never take for granted. Watching their story unfold through my lens has been such a special honor.

Extended family sessions can be hard to coordinate with everyone schedules. They are 100% worth it for the memories that are created with the time spent together!

it’s those little touches that make an image feel intentional and elevated. The way the fabric falls across the top, the shape and placement of the bow on the bonnet, even the smallest styling details can completely change the overall feel. It’s amazing how much those subtle elements add to the final image.
