Rosey Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) This moth, also known as the Great silk moth, is the smallest species of silk moth. They were first discovered by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1793. They have a notable pink and yellow coloration in most cases, but can also be other variations of coloration, such as pinks, creams, whites, yellows, and purples. You can find these throughout the northern and eastern United States and adjacent regions of Canada. I found this one while sweeping my porch and almost swept her up. You can tell this moth is a female because she doesn’t have the big yellow and fluffy antennae that males have. Females are also larger than male Rosy Maples. The main reason I knew this moth was a female was that I kept a close watch on her after I found her. I put her on my pink and yellow begonias and monitored her, thinking I may have injured her when sweeping. The next morning, I woke up to her having passed away after laying eggs in my garden box. I immediately looked into what was going on and discovered she had given birth and died shortly after. Ants were actively trying to make a feast of her eggs, as they are a target for many predators. So I scooped up all of her eggs and am currently waiting for them to hatch. This can take up to two weeks, with the earliest hatch possibility being around just 7 days. I will have to separate the caterpillars immediately upon hatching, so they don’t eat the other eggs. They will then be moved to an enclosure with fresh maple leaves to munch on before I release them back into the wild. I decided to do this for a few reasons. The main reason is that she didn't lay the eggs under a leaf, as they normally do, but they were all over her abdomen and in the dirt, so they had no chance of surviving, especially with ants actively preying upon her eggs. Only a tiny fraction of moth eggs survive to adulthood, so I chose to try to change that. My son and I are also using this as a learning experience for his homeschooling. He is very excited to see them hatch. Rosy Maple moths live from around two to nine months from hatch to adulthood; they go through five instars overall. Their eggs are laid 24 hours after fertilization. The eggs that were laid are ovular and yellow in color. Hopefully, when they start to hatch, I'll have updates.

Liberty and justice for all 🇺🇸

Today we honor and remember those who have fought for this great country and have given the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you ❤️🤍💙

Oh! You who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With all who died.

We cherish, too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

Riverview restaurant, Kure Beach, NC

The stunning views from around the grounds of Riverview restaurant. This little place was my number one favorite while staying in the Carolina Beach area. Featuring an outdoor seating area, a screened-in seating area, and indoor dining to accommodate any type of weather. You go to the bar to order, they then make your drinks right there and you take a number to a table. Once your food is up they bring it out to you. Their fried flounder is one of the best fried fish baskets I’ve ever had served somewhere other than my own kitchen. Their friend shrimp are also done really well. The sides are notably unique and delicious. The black beans with Coquita cheese, and cucumber salad were my go-to choices. For dessert, they have “homemade porch lemonade” floats as well as root beer floats served with root beer fresh from the tap and homemade Blue Bell ice cream. The Lemonade float really sent this place over the top for me. They even put a ginger snap on top. I highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area. It’s an absolute gem with the most stunning views.

Featuring Snow’s Cut Bridge

I know I’ve been MIA lately when it comes to my photography. I am still taking photos and have many to share. I decided, after my camera broke and I had surgery, to take time to be present with my family, rest, and focus on other hobbies for a while. I’m not sure I’ll start posting daily again immediately, but I do plan to work on and share some of what I’ve been up to over the past few months.

Great Egret (Ardea alba) at Carolina Beach State Park, Carolina Beach, NC

I spotted this common Egret catching fish while walking the trails in Carolina Beach State Park. All of my recent photos were taken during prime fog season, which occurs from late fall through early spring in the South. It has quickly become my favorite weather for photography.

Standing about 3 feet tall with a 5-foot wingspan, this large wading bird is found across the globe in most tropical and warmer regions. These include Asia, Africa, the Americas, southern Europe, and increasingly northern parts of Europe. Egrets thrive in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, such as marshes, tidal mudflats, and ponds. They wade slowly in shallow waters, stalking and jabbing at fish with their bills. Occasionally, they swim or hover over water to dip for fish. Known for their elegance and grace, egrets move deliberately and poised, with a distinguished flight style featuring powerful wing strokes and effortless gliding.

These magnificent birds were nearly hunted to extinction in the late 19th century. Poachers sought their feathers for the high value of their delicate nuptial plumes (aigrettes), which were used to make women's hats. This exploitation prompted the creation of the National Audubon Society in 1905 and the passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which ended commercial trade. These were among the first laws designed to protect birds. The Great Egret is also the symbol of the National Audubon Society, dedicated to the advocacy and conservation of birds and their habitats.

Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) Isle of Palms, SC

This guy was hoping a fisherman would pull into the marina with a treat for him to eat.

I would normally share more information about this animal, but I have been having trouble concentrating since my recent wisdom teeth extraction. I unfortunately can't get anything substantial down that would give me my energy back (good old liquid diet) 😢. I do plan to add more information once I start feeling normal again.
