🎬 He told me he wanted to play a lawyer and show a more vulnerable side of himself… so I wrote him this.

A successful attorney whose child has been kidnapped.

Despite all of his connections in the legal system, they still haven’t found her. His wife resents him not only because he couldn’t bring their daughter home, but because she believes he spent so much time focused on his career that he wasn’t there when his family needed him.

The result was this tender scene between a husband and wife dealing with grief, guilt, resentment, and a marriage being pushed to its breaking point.

🎬 Another behind-the-scenes look at me directing one of my latest Cinematic Actor Demo Reel Scenes — coming soon.

This was actually the first time I’ve ever cried while directing a scene.

Every actor is different. Some want to play the action hero. Some want to be the badass. Some want comedy, horror, romance, or something completely different.

But I especially love working with actors who want to go somewhere vulnerable characters carrying trauma, shame, guilt, grief, or something they’re desperately trying not to let the world see.

I had the opportunity to write one of those scenes for this actor.

Even though I wrote the script and knew exactly where the story was going, while we were rehearsing I gave one of the actors an additional line. Just imagining how that moment was going to play before we even filmed it genuinely choked me up.

Those are the moments I love as a filmmaker.

It’s not just about making something look cinematic. It’s about creating circumstances where an actor can actually disappear into a character and show something real and actually feel the scene before you breathe life into it.

🎬 Another Cinematic Actor Demo Scene Coming Soon!

The finished scene will be coming out soon, but for now, here’s another behind-the-scenes look at me directing these two talented actors, along with a few snippets from the scene we created. I really love how this one came together.

One of the biggest things I work on with actors is silence, beats, and what I like to call “tasting the words” before they come out.

Great acting isn’t just about memorizing lines and delivering them correctly.

Think about how we actually communicate. We pause. We search for the right words. We listen. We decide how much we want to reveal. Sometimes we know exactly what we want to say, but we’re still figuring out how we want to say it.

That thought process is what makes a performance feel alive.

You may have rehearsed a scene 20 times and know every word, but when the camera rolls, I want it to feel like you’re experiencing that conversation and discovering those words for the very first time.

Pretty crazy day. I have another actor demo scene to shoot in just a few hours, but I just finished this one and I’m really proud of how it turned out.

This is now the second demo scene where we’ve gotten caught in a rainstorm while filming, and somehow both times the rain ended up giving us an incredibly cinematic atmosphere.

I especially loved creating this one because we got to incorporate some visual effects. The scene was inspired by the idea of an X-Men-style world, but I went through the different powers we’ve already seen and came up with an original ability specifically for this story. I love when a client trusts me enough to just write something original that I think will be cool and give them something different to showcase.

Huge shoutout to this wonderful young actress. She absolutely killed it. And a big shoutout to her scene partner, who was equally amazing and literally left our shoot completely soaking wet to go perform a concert. 😂
