NO TOUCHING 🚫

I wanted to challenge myself to an entire shoot where my couple wasn't touching. I've always been a touchy feely photographer, and thought this would help me grow for my couple's sessions.

I asked Grace + Jeremy to model, and they were absolutely perfect. I gave them prompts to chat with each other and laugh, but after awhile I felt very limited. It started to feel more about the actual poses rather than a connection between them. Which is the heart of all my sessions.

So I dedided to throw the "no touching" out the window.

Once we started on the cuddly poses, their energies instantly changed. They were more at ease, more relaxed, and I started to capture real moments and the sparks between them.

As an artist, its easy to get in my own head and look at my posing as repetitive. Which is why I wanted to start from scratch and try to not have them touch at all and see what would happen. We did create some cool shots to begin the session, but I think seeing this scroll from start to finish helps me to see the story more clearly. There's so much connection through physical touch.

I want to continue to try new things. To grow and learn, and to continue challenging myself. And this was a hard and fun way to do it.

Only have 4 weddings under my belt for this year so far, but it's honestly been such a fun season! I feel like everyone has been focusing on being present and enjoying their days.

Looking ahead, I have so many amazing couples and cool venues. I cannot wait to create and celebrate you all! 🥂

No place like home. ❤️

When I got the initial inquiry email for this session, the message read "Would love a mix of posed and more candid style photos, both inside and outside our home, capturing our everyday moments, full of love."

I gave very minimal direction, and simply let them do their thing. They all played and laughed, and I got to be an observer of what their lives look like when the cameras aren't on. All family sessions should be like this. Don't overthink the poses. Just enjoy being together.

I've been photographing weddings for 11 years now, so insane. I don't even know how many weddings that is. I lost count years ago after 250. And the majority of those I did all by myself. Having a second shooter was honestly rare, and at times really stressed me out. I can be really "type A" when I'm working, so sharing the reins with someone else wasn't always easy for me.

I've learned that my couples deserve their day captured as fully as possible, and I physically can't be everywhere at once. They deserve to relax and enjoy every part of it instead of feeling rushed by one person (me) running around like a mad man all day.

A few years ago I started adding a second shooter to all of my wedding packages. It might be more time culling and editing, it might be more coordinating, but it's worth it for me on a wedding day to be able to slow down and focus on the shots I want, and not have to be worried about missing something else. It has been a big lesson in trust, and I'm so thankful for everyone that has second shot for me and treated my couples and their wedding days with the same care and attention I do.

Special shout out to Madison Renae Photography for being my primary second shooter the past few years. Not only is she so creative and fun, but she also understands my vision and helps me get all the shots I love on a wedding day. It's been so fun having her along and I've loved seeing her growth the past few years. It's going to be such a fun season with her and the few other seconds I get to work with!
