Swamp Siblings!

These two alligator hatchlings were very active, and for a quick second they were "neck in neck", and I thought it would make an interesting shot if I could get both their faces in focus!

I found their nest and guessed they are about four days old (pic of one of the egg shells in the comments)

Alligators grow about one foot per year.

A September morning hike through a forested wetland habitat, cypress swamp and floodplain forest. We are getting our late summer rains, the temps and humidity are fighting for first place, both in the high 90's. I went twice in the same day, first in the early morning but the sun was a little too harsh, so I decided to go back home and return around 6pm to check the light. I wanted to capture the stunning purple colors of the Pickerelw**d blooms with the cypress trees. In between my visits it rained, so when I returned it was like entering a steam bath! The sun was barely able to cut through the thick mist, and the shelf mushrooms were thriving on the fallen tree!

Walk slowly about, look up and around this time of year, August brings an influx of spiders as it marks the start of their mating season. . . . . .those images will be posted soon!

The Sleepy Orange (Eurema Nicippe), a bright orange butterfly has a small black dash near the middle of the forewing which resembles a closed eye which is how the butterfly got its name, and contrary to popular belief, it has a very fast and active flight pattern - and I can confirm!

One of Florida’s 33 first-magnitude springs, Manatee Springs averages a flow of anywhere between 50 to 150 million gallons of water per day and is the largest single spring flowing into the Suwannee River. The spring water flows through the quarter-mile-long spring run to join the river en route to the Gulf. The springshed itself covers an area of over 200 miles, providing water to much of the surrounding area.

One of the park’s most well-known features, in fact, is an extensive series of caves that underlie the spring. Certified cave divers are drawn to the seemingly endless maze of tunnels and passages found underwater here, and many have helped to map more than 5 miles of known routes, as well as determine new information about the flow of water in the spring.

Out on the trail, I walked over a small boardwalk and looked down and saw nothing much, some duckw**d, dark shallow water, and lots of knobby roots. Then I heard the distinct sound of a gator hatchling! I scanned the water, I went back to my truck and got my driving glasses, and again scanned back and forth looking for that bright yellow striped pattern, hoping one would swim out. I knew they were there, I just couldn't find him, and there was no Momma around that I could see. (I posted Momma a few days ago)

I love seeing gator hatchlings so I just kept looking, then I spotted this tiny hatchling, completely still, hiding between a few aquatic w**d seedlings on a muddy mound out of the water. His entire head was only about one inch long. From the exact moment they emerge from their shells, they have developed survival instincts. Gator hatchlings face an incredibly high mortality rate - with 80% to 90% eaten by birds, raccoons, fish and larger gators.

One donut short of a dozen, here are eleven different compositions of the St. Marks Lighthouse, from earlier this week, I can't decide which is my favorite!

The St. Marks Light is the second-oldest light station in Florida, United States. It is located on the east side of the mouth of the St. Marks River, on Apalachee Bay.

oh and while you are up in this area bird watching, fishing, photography, etc., pick up some Tupelo Honey, I always get some on my trips.

Why is Tupelo honey so rare:

1/Short Bloom Window (White Ogeechee tupelo trees)
2/ Remote Ecosystems (mainly Apalachicola and Choctawhatchee rivers)
3/High Fructose (uniquely high ratio of fructose to glucose gives it a buttery, smooth texture and prevents it from ever crystallizing making it sought after by honey connoisseurs)
