I’ve thought long and hard about how to say what I’m about to say — here we go.
A few years ago, a photographer asked me if I was afraid of AI replacing photographers.
I said with complete confidence, “Nope. I actually haven’t given much thought to that at all. You cannot replace the human connection that comes with hiring a photographer.”
I still feel the same way.
What’s crazy is that my assumptions were right. I don’t personally feel that my job has become targeted by AI. What I do see is more AI ads. More AI-generated images. More artificial versions of people.
So instead of sitting here in fear of AI, instead of being angry at AI (a work in progress) I’ve been looking at my role and my responsibility.
AI isn’t going anywhere. We may not have a choice in how often we see it. We may not be able to escape it on our feeds.
But we have a choice to come back to ourselves.
To follow people, artists, creators, and makers who are doing real-life tangible s**t.
And we have the choice to buy from them. Support them. Lift them up.
A client once told me booking a bo***ir shoot was the most radical thing she’d ever done.
Holy s**t is that true today—even though it shouldn’t be.
Booking a bo***ir shoot. Seeing yourself as you are. Hiring a professional. Receiving REAL images of yourself.
What a fu***ng middle finger to AI.
And I love it.
Remember when bo***ir blew up in the 2010s?
I don’t necessarily think bo***ir as it existed then will blow up again. But I do think we’ll see more radical acts of self-love in the form of hiring photographers, booking the shoot, and investing in art.
Photographers, my question to you is:
Are you ready?
Are you ready to lead the way in your city and your market?
Or are you going to let what is unfortunately inevitable take you over?
The choice is yours.
As my boyfriend reminded me last week:
“Illusions promise another life. A wise person looks past it and lives the one in their hands.”
Do with this what you will. But I hope to see my peers leading the way beside me.
