Baptisms always make me cry.
Even though I have been to dozens of Baptisms, I can never get through the entire thing without shedding a tear.
After the actual Baptism with water, the person the sacrament is given a white garment as an outward symbol of their new dignity as a Christian. When it is given, the priest or deacon says:
“…you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.”
The last sentence ALWAYS gets me. Any time I envision myself or someone else being welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven by all those who have gone before, even just for a split second, it’s enough to snap me right back into wanting to be the best Christian I can be.
Moral of the story: go to as many Baptisms as you possibly can. Everyone can use a jump-start now and then.
