I have to be honest… I HATE social media. I love it for sharing my life with my family and friends but I do not enjoy it in regards to my job. I am not good at it, comparison is the thief of joy, it’s easy to be consumed with it and I could go on and on.
But as one does I was scrolling the other day and all of the content I come across is either motherhood, Christian or photography. I came across a girls video who was a client bashing her photographer and I took offense to it. I don’t have any clue who she is and yet I found myself being offended by a total stranger. She said ONE thing that threw me completely off.
She said she was turned off by the photographer that SHE HIRED for her “elopement dinner” because she did maternity and family pictures as well and not only weddings. She said and I quote “I just feel like that gives I’ll take any job I can get rather than specialize in one type rather than like let me do a maternity shoot one day and then a wedding the next idk”. MY JAW WAS ON THE FLOOR!!! The reason I took offense was because I had no clue people thought this way. I’m wondering have people thought I was just a hobby photographer because I have a wide scale of the work that I do? From a photographer standpoint it fills my heart with so much joy creating friendships with my clients and being called back to capture every season of life for them. It’s such an honor to be the one that they call when they get engaged, get married, have a baby, want family pictures, milestone pictures, senior pictures, etc. As a client I would feel the same way and feel secure knowing that I have someone I can trust to make every season of life stand still.
With ALLLLLL of that being said… what are your thoughts? Do you “get the ick” if a photographer doesn’t have a niche and is confident and capable in multiple different areas or do you like the idea of someone being able to follow you through your life events?
