Ashley Griffith (ash)

As a young girl with a disc camera taking photos on her uncle’s farm in Arkansas, Ashley Griffith’s fascination with photography and its ability to capture moments so that we can ponder them and, over time, discover greater meaning in them, started early. Griffith created her Recycled Series as one of the first recipients of the Art 365 grant from the Oklahoma Vis

ual Arts Coalition. Also the Red State Project, she layers audio onto her work, combining interviews and portraits of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Oklahoma, bringing to light the diversity of their stories in order to remove the stigma associated with the disease. In her newest series, 115 moving away from the traditional photography to alternative printing using Chemigrams. Working more like a painter or printmaker than a photographer, Ash replaces the canvas or printing plate with photographic paper, then applies photo developer to the paper to create dark areas and fixer for lighter tones. She is the owner of a.k.a. Studio in the Paseo Arts District of Oklahoma City, which opened in 2006. Griffith received her B.F.A. in Photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 2001. She has studied with Arnold Newman and Judy Dater, among others. She lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
