She told me she usually hates photoshoots.

She feels awkward in front of the camera, she was nervous about working with someone she’d never met, and she was already imagining that feeling of standing there thinking, Okay… what do I do with my hands? 😂

That’s exactly why I don’t expect you to show up knowing how to be “good at pictures.” That’s my job.

During her maternity session, I guided her and her husband through everything. Where to stand, what to do, where to look, how to move. Somewhere along the way, the nerves disappeared and what she expected to feel awkward and uncomfortable actually became fun. Like a lot a fun.

Then she got to see the photos.

The woman who was worried she wouldn’t know what to do ended up with maternity photos she said exceeded everything they expected. More importantly, they have beautiful images of this tiny little chapter of their lives that they’ll never get back.

You don’t need to be photogenic. You don’t need to practice poses. You don’t even need to like having your picture taken.

You just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.

I’m a professional photographer and I likely couldn’t pass a photography test…

For real, I started photography with a $500 camera and free Photoshop actions. I wasn’t formally taught. I learned by photographing people over and over and over again. I made mistakes, figured things out, practiced, and kept going.

There are still technical photography questions that I probably couldn’t explain to you in textbook terms. What I can do is walk into almost any situation and find the light. I can make a woman who swears she’s awkward feel comfortable in front of my camera. I can see the little moments happening between people and know when to click the shutter.

That knowledge came from experience. Thirteen years to be exact.

Education is valuable. Learning is important. I’m STILL learning. I just don’t think you have to wait until you know everything before you give yourself permission to begin.

Whatever it is you’ve been telling yourself you need to “learn more” before you try… maybe you actually just need to start. I would never be here if I didn’t.

Plot twist: maybe I don’t need to market to my “ideal client” when my clients are out here finding their ideal photographer. 😂

I’ve never wanted to build a business where my clients all look the same, dress the same, or fit into some perfectly defined box.

I’d rather show up as myself, share what I believe in, create the kind of experience I believe women deserve, and let the right people think, “Yep. She’s my kind of person.”

My clients don’t have a “look.” They have different bodies, backgrounds, personalities, and stories.

Although apparently every once in a while, one of you is going to show up looking suspiciously like your photographer. 😂
