What's so fun about my job? It's this!

I get to help business owners create images that communicate their mission to their customers.

It sounds simple, but it takes planning and intention.

We talk a lot before the session about what to wear, how to prepare for the session (tip: stay hydrated and take extra good care of yourself in the days before your photoshoot.)

We also talk about how you want your photos to look, but more importantly, how you want your photos to feel.

What do you want people to feel when they see your photos? And what do you want your photo to tell people about your work?

I'll talk more about why all of this matters in an upcoming post.

Why is having presence in photos so hard?

For most people the struggle isn’t with photos.

The struggle is with being seen.

Being seen feels vulnerable.

So we:
• Pose instead of inhabit
• Smile instead of feel
• Perform instead of exist

We try to control the outcome instead of allowing our true presence to come through.

The most powerful images are not controlled.

They are connected.

When someone is grounded and connected in the present, the photograph stops feeling staged and starts feeling honest.

Once you discover how to be present in your photographs.

You’ll start to feel different about how you look in your photos too.

The One Thing

That will make you look better in almost any photo.

Be present.

Not performative.
Not polished.
Not “camera ready.”

Present.

When you step in front of a lens and you try to:

• Look successful
• Look thinner
• Look impressive
• Look like someone else

Your face and your body subtly tighten.

But when you let yourself arrive and be fully present, something softens.

Your eyes settle.
Your posture aligns naturally.
Your expression becomes real.

The camera responds to presence, authenticity and the real you.

And real is magnetic.

The Myth

“I'm just not photogenic.”

I hear this all the time.

But “photogenic” is not a personality trait.
It’s not a body type, symmetry or bone structure.
And it's NOT looking like a model.

Most people who think they aren’t photogenic are simply trying to “get it right.”

To look polished.
To look put together.
To look like the version of themselves they believe is expected.

That effort creates tension.

And the camera captures tension faster than it captures beauty.

The opposite of tension isn’t perfection.
It’s presence. And presence is what the camera remembers.
