I never shared this one from 2024. I love how you can clearly see the solar filaments dancing across its surface. I remember this being really cool to see live, essentially what looked like a red tail hanging off the side of the sun. While a single shot, this is more of a creative crop, which I then enlarged. The bright spots of the image are called Baily’s Beads, named for Francis Baily while explained this in 1836, during an eclipse when the rugged surface of the moon allow light of the sun to pass by, looking like beads.

While many across the world were able to see a mother total solar eclipse, Maine only had about 25%. I was working and in meetings, but thinking back to this amazing day back in April 2024, when I got to experience totality with my family. So incredible.

Totality:

My family and I traveled to Millinocket to view the eclipse this weekend. After scoping out areas with my daughter, we found a lake an hour and a half drive out the Golden Road that was perfect for viewing. What an unforgettable experience! It is crazy how dark it gets, and how quickly it transitions back to daytime from totality. We could see bright magenta solar prominences (flares swirling about the surface of the sun) with your naked eye, with some being discussed as 2.5 earths in size! You can see the detail of the moon due to earthshine, the light rlof the sun, reflecting off the earth, back to the moon!

To make this image, I had my camera with a 600mm lens pointed at the eclipse, and shot a serious of images and varying shutter speeds to attempt to get detail of the sun’s corona (white glow around the moon) and to try to get it bright enough to be able to increase my exposure in post to get moon detail. I used 12 images to stack for the corona, and I had 8 images with enough detail to stack for the moon. I had to edit them separately then merge back together as different layers in photoshop. More images would have been helpful to get better moon detail, but I stopped shooting for a bit to enjoy the experience with my family, and that was more important. Still, the image I was able to create is pretty cool.

As night begins to transition to day, the sky starts to get a little bluer and some sunlight starts to creep in on the horizon. This image is a short walk from my previous post on the Schoodic peninsula. There are a few exposed cliffs with narrow gorges carved out of the landscape. I can only imagine the power that made this happen. It was fun to see at night from the angle, listening to the waves crash underneath. So peaceful.

I’ve always wanted to photograph the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia national park at night. Early Sunday morning I took the opportunity after working a wedding all day then driving 2.5 hours to Bar Harbor to check the skies and take advantage of a small window of clear skies and milkyway visibility. This is a pretty well known view to landscape photographers, but it’s still awe inspiring every time I see it, and now I have one of my own!

Echo Lake

Tucked away in Franconia Notch, Echo lake provides for a great view of Cannon Mountain and Mount Lafayette, especially at night. I love how the calm of the water reflects the mountains perfectly.

Back home from a 4 day trip in search of deer fawns and deer in the lupine. It turned out to be a successful adventure: 15 newborn fawns, and countless deer enjoying the lupine.

An Evening with Lupines

Not much better than a calm night with a field of lupines with the stars rising above an mountains in the distance. Sugar Hill in NH is just special in June.

Sugar Hill Lupines

Lupines are an invasive flower that blooms in purples, red, pinks, and white early June. The blooms themselves only last a couple of weeks, then they’re gone for the year. I took a trip out to New Hampshire, to get this flower against a backdrop of mountains. I’d say mission accomplished, but the cherry on top was no ticks! If you find yourself in the area of this view, please understand that this spot is one of the few remaining areas that keep Lupines for our enjoyment. Many areas were mowed due to inappropriate use. Always carry in/ carry out, leave no trace, and stick to the path.
