A persimmon that tastes like honey and looks like it's hiding chocolate inside. I did not expect that from a trip to the Asian market today.
I have been fascinated by persimmons since discovering them a couple of years ago. I liked them enough that I now have four American persimmon trees growing on our property, since that variety is actually native right here to our area. But today I found something new to me: the chocolate persimmon, a rare Asian variety.
Don't let the name fool you. They don't taste like chocolate at all. The name comes from the flesh, which turns a deep brown, more like cinnamon than anything else, once the fruit ripens. The flavor itself is something closer to honey, with a hint of brown sugar underneath. Genuinely delicious.
Unfortunately, this variety won't survive our Zone 6a winters here in Omaha. So I'm going to save the seeds and see if I can grow a few as houseplants instead. Worth a try, and I'll let you know how it goes.
