Great Blue Heron takes a peek

During the "Plume Boom" in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many species of wading birds were slaughtered for their breeding plumes to decorate womens fancy hats. By 1903, heron plumes were valued at $32 per ounce. At the time, gold was priced at about $20 per ounce, making bird feathers one of the most valuable legal commodities in the world.

A Killdeer nest is incredibly hard to spot. To build this nest, males and females engage in a “scrape ceremony.” The male lowers his chest to the ground to shape a divot. If the female accepts, she’ll approach the spot and take the males place, while he puffs up and calls loudly.

This was taken in Yellowstone National Park in an offshoot of a geyser, as her chicks forage nearby. Look closely and you can see the baby hiding beneath her.

Juvenile Great Blue Herons leave the nest around 60 days old. They do kot have the ornate head plumes of adults, instead they have gray-brown crowns, heavily streaked necks, and less-defined yellow bills.
