This is why families are my favorite.

Not because of perfectly coordinated outfits or blooming lilacs (although I'll gladly take both), but because I get to witness the in-between years. The years where one child becomes two. Where tiny babies return with completely different personalities. Where a family grows, changes, and somehow still feels exactly like themselves.

I've photographed this crew multiple times now, and every session feels like opening the next page of a story I've been lucky enough to follow.

Let's talk lighting!

Photography is all about light and emotion, and learning how to embrace both in every season and setting. This session was photographed at 4pm in April with bright sun, open spaces, and not a lot of tree coverage. A few years ago, I would have been such a stickler about only shooting at sunset for that soft, glowy light. But over time, and since becoming a mom(hello bedtime), I’ve learned that every kind of lighting has its own beauty and feeling to it.

I love being flexible with my clients and their real life routines, especially with little ones. Sometimes the best photos don’t happen at “perfect” golden hour, they happen when kids are happy, rested, and able to just be themselves. And honestly, there’s something I really love about the warmth, contrast, and brightness that daytime light can bring to a gallery.

I genuinely couldn’t pick a favorite from this newborn session.

It just felt extra special getting to photograph their maternity photos a few months ago, and then coming back and seeing them again with their new little addition. I don’t know… it never gets old.

I’ve said it before, but I really love doing newborn sessions in people’s homes. It just feels more real, you know? Like this is where life is actually happening. The slow mornings, the messy moments, all the in-between stuff that ends up meaning the most later on.

I feel like somewhere along the way we kind of stopped taking intentional photos at home. We all have our phones, but somehow we’re either taking way too many… or we’re not really in them at all. Especially moms.

And I don’t know, I just always think about how someday your kids are going to look back and want to see you in those memories too. Not just them as babies, but you holding them, loving them, living life with them, in the home they grew up in.

So yeah… just a little reminder to get in the photos 🤍
