I’ve been out of town for a few days, but I’m finally back—and it feels so good to have my toes in the sand again! 💛

Here along the Gulf Coast, Great Blue Herons have been called “Fred” since the oil spill. Because of that tradition, many people naturally assumed my videos showed a different “Fred” each day.

But the Fred in my story was always the same bird.

I recognized him by the net tangled around his beak. Every time I returned to the beach, I wasn’t simply looking for another Great Blue Heron—I was looking for him.

This was the one bird I watched for, worried about and was determined to help. This was my Fred. 💛

The Story of Fred: Part 4. Great Blue Herons are powerful—but they’re also more delicate than they appear.

They can stand nearly 4½ feet tall and have a wingspan of up to 6½ feet. One study estimated that an adult may need around 10½ ounces of fish each day. And they can travel incredible distances: one GPS-tracked Great Blue Heron flew 2,030 miles nonstop in 68 hours!

But their size doesn’t make them invincible. Herons are highly sensitive to stress. When they feel threatened, their fight-or-flight response can quickly raise their heart rate, breathing and body temperature.

Please don’t allow children to chase birds on the beach. I see it often, and while it may seem harmless, the bird is being frightened and forced to use valuable energy trying to escape. When I can, I turn it into a positive teaching moment by talking with the child about giving wildlife space—and then giving them a Gulf Coast Gurlie sticker. 💛

We can also protect these beautiful birds by picking up plastic and every piece of fishing line. Please don’t feed herons, especially around people who are fishing. Feeding draws them closer to hooks and fishing line, where they’re more likely to become injured or tangled.

Love them, watch them and protect them—but always respect that they are wild. 💛

The Story of Fred: Part 3 Apparently Fred heard there was a shark on the beach—and decided to handle it himself. 😂

He grabbed this plastic shark and took off while I chased him down the beach yelling, “Fred, NO!” That was the day I discovered the bird I was trying to help also had a very mischievous side.

A few days after first seeing Fred, I spotted him again—but this time, I realized something was wrong.

Fishing net was tangled around his beak, leaving him unable to fish for his own breakfast. What initially looked like another peaceful moment with a beautiful Great Blue Heron was actually the beginning of Fred’s struggle.

At the time, I had no idea what it would take to help him—or how much this special bird would eventually mean to me. 💛
