Today is Arbor Day! did not start in Ann Arbor, Michigan but in Nebraska. The first Arbor Day was on April 10, 1872. The idea came from Julius Morton who thought that trees were needed in Nebraska for wind breaks, to stabilize the soil, and for shade. He planted many trees around his farm and encouraged other farmers to do the same. When Morton became a member of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture he proposed the idea of Arbor Day, a day when people would plant trees throughout the state of Nebraska. The day was approved and around 1 million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day.

Whoooo remembers Woody's the Owl. of Keep America Beautiful are still as important today as yesterday. This is National Keep America Beautiful Month. Keep America Beautiful Month is celebrated each year in April. It celebrates the things we all can do to make our country a more beautiful and better place. The Keep America Beautiful Foundation is a US based non-profit organization that has three basic missions: reducing waste, preventing litter and beautifying communities. Everyone makes a difference in keeping America beautiful.

Reduce waste by repurposing and reusing old items. Recycling is another important way we can all reduce waste in our communities.

Many people celebrate Keep America Beautiful Month by teaching children about preventing litter. April is a good time to adopt a highway, street or park and participate in helping to clean up your community.

Beautifying your community can be a fun and creative project. Clean up the winter debris in your yard. Plant a tree, some flowers or even a garden. Put a fresh coat of paint on your fence or deck.

- Initiative April 18th. had awesome time volunteering this weekend. We paint the home of 87 year Charley, pictured below. In less than 5 hours, we painted the entire house, garage, brick fence and gates. Charley was beyond appreciation. He kept saying he can’t believe all these people (about 50) came to his house to help him. It was an honor to meet and speak with him. He really appreciated all the work and we appreciate him. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. Thank you St. John’s Lutheran Church of Orange for all the volunteers and organizing the event. Can’t wait to do it again. By the way Charley, we loved the paint colors you choose.
