It's been nearly a year since comet NEOWISE flew past the Earth. A few months into the most impactful and life-altering event that most of us on this planet have ever experienced, NEOWISE gave people around the world a moment of pause, distraction, and awe.

This post is long-overdue, and is the culmination of a lot of firsts in my photographic journey, a lot of challenges, and a lot of learning. Photographing NEOWISE was my first real attempt at astrophotography, and my first attempt at time-lapse photography. Before venturing out to capture these images I didn't know the challenges of capturing a timelapse, let alone one that includes sunset. (I learned later that timelapses capturing drastic shifts in lighting, such as sunrise or sunset, are considered "Holy Grail" timelapses!)

The results aren't perfect. I should have stopped down the aperture to prevent diffraction causing the halo effect around the middle of the image. I should have increased my shutter speed a stop or two, to keep the stars a little bit sharper. I shouldn't have spent days editing out black dots of birds in the sky, flashing around the images. Despite my best efforts, there is still some lingering flicker in the final video, as the lighting conditions change.

On top of all those learnings I had to learn to use LRTimelapse, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe After Effects. I had to deal with my Lightroom catalog becoming corrupt and the process of recovering it. This has been a long process, and part of me is hesitant to even post the result. I always strive for perfection and I hate the idea of presenting something to the world that isn't perfect - but in the end it will never be perfect, and the biggest joy of photography is being able to share the beauty and wonder of the world around us.

Were you able to view the comet last July, and if so did it have the same impact on you as it did on me? I'd love to hear your stories!

Also, a very special thanks to Cory Taylor for recording Colour My World for me to use for this video. As I was putting it together I knew that song would be a perfect fit.

You don't need to leave your backyard to gaze at the universe!
---------------------------------
I've been wanting to get into astrophotography for a long time. I've been an avid camper my whole life, and have always loved looking up in amazement at the night sky. With all the hype around comet Neowise I thought this would be the perfect opportunity - don't want to miss the once in a (many) lifetime experience!

I almost didn't go out to see it though - we got a puppy a couple months ago and she's kept us on a pretty strict routine; driving far out of the suburbs to get away from the light pollution wasn't really an option and I didn't think there would be any good composition opportunities close by.

Then my parents mentioned that they had seen the comet over Apple Island - I immediately knew this could be an epic shot. A little backstory - this island is in the middle of Orchard Lake, one of many small lakes in the area. The island is owned by the local school district and tours are given once a year. When I was kid my parents took us a couple of times and it was such a cool experience - just the fact of being on an island and seeing the foundations of the old houses that used to be there. Urban legend is that Chief Pontiac was buried there (he wasn't), and the island was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. About a year-and-a-half ago my girlfriend Cory Taylor started working at Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society, the caretakers of the island, and one of her responsibilities is running the Apple Island tours. This little island has always been a part of my life in some way and I'm so happy to have been able to get this shot!

The point of all this is that I almost missed out on this once in a lifetime experience because I didn't have the opportunity to travel to a "good" photography spot. I got this shot less than a mile from my house and I think I did pretty good for my first real time shooting the stars!

Today is World Rhino Day, "established to celebrate the world's five rhinoceros species, and to reflect on the challenges facing them."

A rhino's horn is made of keratin fibers (found in hair and nails) instead of bone, and grows from the rhino's skin. - Fun fact credit

New pictures!! I'm proud to say that I got another batch of photos posted within a year of my last post! 😁 Much better than the multiple years I was going between uploads in the past, but I'm going to try really hard to post more photos much more frequently.

Let me know what you think of these, and share them if you like them! Oh, and follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/claytonjamesphotography/ (I'm on Pinterest and Flickr too)
