❗️[trigger warning • car accident] ❗️
Twenty years ago today, May 31, 2004 [Memorial Day] in Round Rock, TX — [where my family and I currently are], my life changed forever during a cross-country road trip with a friend that nearly ended in tragedy. Little did I know, danger was hurtling towards us at over 90mph. A drunk driver in a Porsche, out of control and reckless, crashed into my car with a force that miraculously did not claim my life.
In an instant, our cars collided head-on. 135mph+ driver/driver impact. The driver of the Porsche, who had a passenger with him, did not survive the crash. It was a devastating, life-changing moment. My friend miraculously walked away with minor injuries, but I was not as fortunate. Pinned by the entire engine of my car, I endured over two hours before being extricated by rescue teams. I was then airlifted to a trauma hospital, where doctors painstakingly removed glass shards embedded throughout my body & was rushed into several emergency surgeries. The crash left me with a broken neck, compound fractures to my right arm and leg and multiple other breaks and lacerations.
Surviving such a traumatic event reshaped my entire outlook on life. I chose to embrace a life of adventure and exploration and to prioritize meaningful experiences.
In 2009, Shylah & I headed out on another cross country road trip. Family & friends expressed their concern, understandably. Both of these cross country roadtrips, even though the first one ended the way it did, were two of that absolute greatest experiences of my life.
Today, my family and I live full-time on the road, traveling in our RV and exploring this beautiful country. This life choice could’ve been a scary decision to make for me with what happened however it has profoundly enriched our lives.
I’m beyond grateful to be alive and living this wild ride of life with purpose. Our travels are a testament to the resilience of the human strength and the beauty of living life on our own terms.
Fear won’t stop us & I hope you allow it to propel you forward also ❤️
