*Aaaaahhh! 😱 I can’t believe it’s Monday 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯!*

This year is flying by… but I’m still riding the joy from my time in Rio and all the amazing birds I got to photograph, like this loud little superstar, the 𝐒𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐲-𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐨𝐝-𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥 (𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘢-𝘥𝘰-𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘰).

They’re only found in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, and boy do they make their presence known! My trip to Brazil was definitely the highlight of my year, and I’m grateful for every moment I shared with my family and with nature. 💛🇧🇷

O ano está passando voando… mas ainda estou cheia de alegria pela minha temporada no Rio e por todos os pássaros incríveis que pude fotografar, como essa figura barulhenta, a 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚-𝐝𝐨-𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐨 (𝘚𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘺-𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥-𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘭).

Ela é encontrada apenas no Brasil, Argentina e Paraguai, e olha… sabe se fazer ouvir! Minha viagem ao Brasil foi, sem dúvida, o ponto alto do meu ano, e sou muito grata por cada momento com minha família e com a natureza. 💛🇧🇷

𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 🐦‍⬛

Meet the 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐅𝐥𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 (𝘏𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢), not the flashiest bird in Brazil but definitely one of the most charming! 😍 Several of them were hanging around my sister’s apartment building in Rio, completely unbothered by people. This curious fellow landed just a couple of feet away on her A/C unit! In Portuguese, they’re called Gibão-de-Couro (literally “leather jacket”) — how cool is that? 😎 I loved watching them perform their aerial acrobatics while hunting insects mid-air, just like little swallows. 🤎

Apresento o 𝐆𝐢𝐛ã𝐨-𝐝𝐞-𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐨 (𝘏𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢), não é o pássaro mais colorido do Brasil mas certamente um dos mais charmosos! 😍 Vários deles estavam por perto do prédio da minha irmã no Rio, super à vontade entre as pessoas. Esse aí pousou a poucos passos de mim, no ar-condicionado dela! O nome em português é ótimo, “Gibão-de-Couro”! 😎 Adorei observar suas acrobacias no ar enquanto caçavam insetos, lembrando pequenas andorinhas. 🤎

𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭 spotted! 🍌🐥
Or as they call it in Brazil, the sweet little 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒄𝒂. 💛🐦

Such a small, energetic bird with a big presence. A true nectar lover that brightened my day.

🇧🇷 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐓𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐘 🇧🇷

‼️ 🅻🅸🅵🅴🆁 ‼️

A true lifer and the crown jewel of my Rio bird bucket list! 🤩 After multiple outings and countless attempts, I finally had the privilege of photographing the 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹-𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗮𝗻
(𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴). This striking bird is found in Rio de Janeiro and is actually the state’s official bird. It was reintroduced to Tijuca National Park in the 1960s and is also commonly known as the Yellow-throated Toucan. It thrives in humid forests and forest edges, and seeing it in the wild was nothing short of unforgettable!! 🖤🧡💛💙❤️

Um lifer muito especial e o mais desejado da minha lista de aves do Rio! 🤩 Depois de várias tentativas e muitas caminhadas, realizei o sonho de fotografar o 𝗧𝘂𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗼-𝗱𝗲-𝗯𝗶𝗰𝗼-𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼 (𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴). Essa espécie incrível é a ave-símbolo do estado do Rio de Janeiro e foi reintroduzida no Parque Nacional da Tijuca na década de 60. Também conhecido como tucano-de-peito-amarelo, é comum em florestas úmidas e bordas de mata. Encontrá-lo assim, em seu ambiente natural, foi uma experiência emocionante e inesquecível!! 🖤🧡❤️💛💙

✨ Back after a long hiatus and what a way to return! 🤩 On my very first birding adventure in Brazil, I was thrilled to encounter one of the most special lifers of the trip: the stunning 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 (𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯) 🇧🇷

Ever since I first learned about this species, I dreamed of photographing it, and finally spotting this dazzling little canopy acrobat in person was a dream come true. Tiny, restless, and high in the treetops, he kept me on my toes, but every second was worth it! 💚💛💙

✨ Na minha primeira aventura de observação de aves no Brasil, consegui fotografar um dos lifers mais especiais da viagem: o deslumbrante 𝗦𝗮í𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 (𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯) 🇧🇷

Há anos sonhava em conhecer essa espécie de perto. Minúsculo, ágil e cheio de energia, foi um desafio fazer esse registro num dia de muito sol e calor no RJ, mas o esforço e a persistência valeram a pena! 💚💛💙

Brown Thrasher Thursday 🐦‍⬛🤎

For the first three years we lived here, the Brown Thrasher made sporadic visits to our yard, but as of early last fall, he decided to move in permanently. 🙌🏼 I guess he figured there would be some good eats here, such as the peanuts and blueberries he loves, hehe. 🥜🫐 Isn't he handsome? 😌

Marsupial Monday

Meet Moe, my backyard pet “possum” (Virginia Opossum) ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ

His favorite foods are: hot dogs, bananas, cheese, apples, grapes, chicken and crackers. 🌭🍌🍇🧀🍎🍗

Interesting facts:

🔸 Opossums are beneficial to have around because they eat a variety of pests and vermin, including insects, ticks, rodents and snakes. They also eat rotting fruits and vegetables, and road kill for the extra calcium they need.

🔸 Opossums have 50 teeth, which is more than any other North American land mammal.

🔸 Opossums are unlikely to get rabies because their lower body temperature makes them unsuitable for the rabies virus.

🔸 Opossums are known for feigning death, or pretending to be dead (“playing possum”), whenever they feel threatened or scared. This behavior is mostly displayed by young opossums.

🔸 They have an excellent memory and a very sensitive nose; enabling them to find and remember where food is.
