CityScape: Layers of Expression, 2026

CityScape: Layers of Expression is a socially engaged project grounded in direct community engagement, the intersection of media and practice through the art of conversation, and a deliberate focus on fostering dialogue across the boundaries of Bangor, Maine’s local art community. The scape of sculptures to which I invite the viewer to traverse is the landscape of experience and knowledge—a city of layering voices of the individuals that make up the local creative community. In addition to the sculptures, there is an invitational space where viewers and artists alike can engage with the principles of this project, converse, and create a constructed space of experience through language.

By examining the literal and metaphorical meanings of material, I have expanded my understanding of different approaches to creative practice. The unique and non-typical ways of making create an entirely different way of experiencing a work of art, things that can only be learned through conversation. These conversations are conducted in an interview-style format and are both audio- and video-recorded. Then the language is curated after reviewing for major themes and messages that align with my thesis’s overall concept. The transcripts are then converted into physical material for use in an installation at the Lord Hall Gallery.
