Glowworm survey night at Blue Spring State Park! 🌟🪱
I joined Ecology Ellie 🌱🏳️🌈♾ to search for firefly larvae: aka glowworms!
Despite their name, fireflies aren’t actually flies… they’re beetles! 🪲 They’re holometabolous, meaning they undergo complete metamorphosis: egg ➡️ larva ➡️ pupa ➡️ adult.
With larvae as our target, we searched through the leaf litter and debris beneath the trees where these ground-dwelling glowworms can be found. Once our eyes adjusted to the darkness, we started spotting their faint glow across the forest floor and began our survey! 🔦🌿
We saw HUNDREDS throughout the night (though I unfortunately didn’t get a good photo of them 😭), along with all kinds of other nocturnal critters 🕷️🐸
