I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — there is something so incredibly special about people who adopt a senior dog, knowing all too well that their time with them may be far too short and that their medical needs may be much more complicated than most people are willing or able to take on.
Devyn is one of those rare people who stepped up to the plate and gave an old dog with a rough past exactly what she deserved. She gave Cleo the love, attention, comfort and life she should have known from the very beginning.
When I first met them, I honestly thought Devyn had had Cleo since she was a puppy. The two of them were so incredibly bonded and inseparable that it was hard to imagine them having ever lived without one another -but their story was actually much shorter than that.
Devyn only had Cleo for two years, yet somehow, in those two years, they packed in what felt like a lifetime of love. Cleo got to know what it was like to be safe, cared for, and loved completely. She got to have someone who knew her, understood her, advocated for her and made sure that the final chapter of her life was nothing like the chapters that came before it - and that is the beautiful thing about adopting a senior dog. You may not get ten years, or even five -sometimes you only get two…but those two years can mean absolutely everything.
Cleo may have arrived later in Devyn’s life than most dogs do, but she didn’t leave this world wondering whether she was loved. She 1000% knew she was, and I think that is one of the greatest gifts we can ever give a dog — especially one who has already spent too much of their life without it.🤍
