Sunset Sail, Portland Head Light

On a recent trip to Maine, I wanted to take snapshots that simply captured the moment as it unfolded. I wasn’t too focused on creating “fine art” images, but rather on preserving moments in time.

This was one of those classic “Maine moments,” with a sailboat sailing past the lighthouse. I considered waiting with my tripod until the people moved out of the frame to have a shot without them, but in this case, I think the people actually add something special to the image.

Maine Afternoon, Portland Head Light

Something a bit different, this was a client-requested image with a strict set of demands and no room for compromise. The photo had to be taken in “normal light,” avoiding the golden hour or sunrise/sunset glow, and feature white, puffy clouds to capture the feel of an afternoon at the lighthouse. As luck would have it, everything came together perfectly. And the client? That was me. LOL

Beach Roses and Foggy Morning.

Beach Roses in the Fog. Just getting back from a weekend trip to coastal Maine. After leaving our house almost an hour later then we had planned on, we arrived to our hotel and finally got up to our room just before 11pm. With my 4am alarm set to go off in just a few very short hours we headed off to bed. Once the alarm went off and I made it out to the lighthouse parking area I found the gates still closed and the entire area covered in fog. While waiting for the gates to open I got to chat with long time friend and photographer Sean Baker. We chatted and swatted at the mosquitos until the gates opened and we made our way out the lighthouse. Once at the lighthouse we framed up some nice comps and just chatted and made some images. It was a really nice morning spent on the coast.

Some may say that shooting in the fog is horrible, but I actually really enjoy it and the mood it offers.

Man's Best Friend, Adirondacks Mountains

I have so thoughts about the moment I captured last autumn in the northern Adirondack Mountains. The bond between a man and his favorite hunting buddy is truly something special. Later that morning, I met the pup, he was such a good dog, and it was clear he truly loved his dad and the dad loved him. two peas in a pod i guess.

Ram Island Ledge Light

The morning fog was thick and blanketed the ocean. It made for such a interesting scene. I framed up the Ram Island Ledge Light and the rocky shore of the Portland Head Lighthouse. The writing on the rocks show where a ship ran aground years ago.

Passing Through, Portland Head Light

It was a fascinating morning at the Portland Head Light in June 2024. A beautiful fog blanketed the area, and shortly after sunrise, it drifted back toward the water. In the distance on the right, you could just make out the top of the Rams Island Lighthouse and a passing tugboat pushing a barge. The fog horns sounded for a long time, and it was wonderful to simply sit and watch the lighthouse at work, protecting ships from the shore and guiding them through the fog. Even knowing the ships have GPS and a port pilot on board, it was still an impressive sight.
