🐢🐢 🐢Today is Gopher Tortoise Day! These special creatures are considered a keystone species because they dig burrows that provide shelter for 360 other species of wildlife. This includes the gopher frog, Florida mouse, eastern indigo snake, and hundreds of invertebrates like beetles and crickets. Without the gopher tortoise, many of these species would not exist. This photo of a gopher tortoise burrow on the side of the road demonstrates what difficulties they face from over development. Let's all celebrate, and protect, the gopher tortoise! 🐢🐢🐢

Lots of baby Roseate spoonbills and some baby Great egrets on today's trip. It was hot so one of the egrets took a dip to cool off. And as a bonus, one of my dreams came true - I finally photographed a cow with a Cattle egret! 😍

Love hearing them all, but the second bird, the Red-winged blackbird, is possibly my favorite. That's a sound I look forward to hearing each time we go to wetlands and rookeries. There are a few other distinctive sounds from Florida's birds that weren't included here, one of which is the pretty little Tri-colored heron that makes a funny sound when it's annoyed. 🐦‍⬛🦉🦆
