📸 Meet Steven Kovacs | Unveiling the Story Behind the Shot!
As part of our "Photographer Spotlight" series, we are proud to feature Steven Kovacs and the rare, technical masterpiece he captured in the dark waters of the Atlantic. Here is the fascinating story behind his deep-sea portrait:
"This is a portrait of a Kali colubrina, a member of the Chiasmodontidae family, commonly known as Snaketooth fishes or Swallowers. Locating blackwater subjects like this requires years of practice in learning how to track these animals, combined with the pure luck of encountering them during a dive. In Florida, there are no dedicated guides to help find these critters—it is entirely up to the diver to master the art of the search.
The Atmosphere & Challenges:
Finding an animal like this always inspires a profound sense of awe, but once found, they are notoriously difficult to photograph. They have a frustrating habit of hanging upside down in the water column, looking straight down and rotating in circles. To capture a strong portrait, I have to shoot straight upward from directly beneath them, which is incredibly challenging.
Furthermore, these fish are highly sensitive to white light; they often become uncooperative and swim away rapidly. One night, I was fortunate enough to find this beautiful individual fully displaying its elegant fins. It stayed relatively calm, allowing me to attempt a few shots. Just as I was setting up, it suddenly decided to yawn—I had to react instantly to capture that exact moment.
The Message:
This image highlights how little we truly know about life in the ocean's depths. There are countless species that very few humans will ever have the privilege to encounter. Every time I see an animal like this, it makes me wonder how many more incredible species are still waiting in the darkness to be discovered. I hope this image transports viewers into a state of wonder for the unknown."
Support my work as I strive to photograph the rarely seen inhabitants of the deep ocean. Every vote helps bring these hidden wonders to light!

I'm always amused watching this Jack species swimming around with a Jellyfish in its mouth, holding it under its "chin" for protection. Doesn't seem like much protection but it must somehow work! Blackwater dive off Bali, Indonesia with Utama Villa Tulamben
