🐊 Happy National Wildlife Day 🌿🐢🦩🦉🦀🐿️🐸🦋

From the springs and rivers full of manatees and turtles, to the swamps where the alligators run the show, this state has some of the most diverse wildlife around!

But none of it survives without the land. You can’t save an animal if you don’t save its home too. Every time reckless development takes over another piece of land, that’s another spot these animals can’t come back to.

This is why land conservation matters so much. Organizations like Conservation Florida are out here protecting Florida’s wild spaces before they’re gone for good. Check out their page and website to see the work they’re doing and how you can get involved or help 💚🐸

I feel really lucky to get out there and photograph this wildlife, each photo is its own special encounter. Getting out there and seeing these animals for yourself hits different than just knowing they exist. Standing near a gopher tortoise or seeing the flamingos that are finally making their way back to Florida really puts things into perspective. If you get the chance, go find a trail near you and see what wildlife is out there!🥾🔍🦉

Today is International Primate Day 🐒🌍✨A day to raise awareness for primates and the challenges they face, from shrinking wild habitats to lives in captivity. It is also a reminder of the responsibility we share to protect them.

One place I care deeply about is Save the Chimps in Fort Pierce, one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world. I volunteer here and have seen the care and dedication that goes into giving these chimps a second chance at life. Many were rescued from research laboratories, the pet trade, or entertainment. At the sanctuary they finally find safety, friendships, and comfort 💛🐵
With healthy meals 🥬🌶️🍌, veterinary care 🩺, enrichment activities 🧩🎨, and the freedom to live in family groups, the chimps are able to live out their lives in peace.
If you would like to learn more about their mission, please visit their profile or website Save the Chimps

Flippers up, because it’s Friday!! 🙌🏼🐢🙌🏼💚

Here is a little throwback to some of my very first wildlife photos from the Florida Springs, back when I’d just gotten my first full frame camera and my first wildlife lens, a Sony 70-350mm lens that’s much smaller than my current Sony 200-600mm lens. Even though it’s an apsc lens, it’s very good and I still use it now and then.

I was paddling by this massive gator, all cute, photographing it, until it decided to get up and get into the water. That was it, photo session over. 🐊 There were still plenty of turtles to photograph, though they weren’t too interested in a shoot either 🐢💦

Would you like to see more content about the specific gear I use, lenses, cameras, and so on? Let me know in the comments 💬⤵

Since losing all my photos from the past couple years, I’ve been digging through old hard drives, and opened up my Alaska photos again, where took thousands of photos but only edited a handful. These photos of a little squirrel didn’t make the cut before, I thought they weren’t impressive enough next to the bears, moose, puffins, and bald eagles I saw. But looking back now, I love them. I remember chasing this little guy through the forest, having so much fun, and these photos bring me so much joy. 🐿️🧡🌿🌳🌲

World Photography Day 📸

I picked up a camera for the first time in 2020, and it grew into a real love for wildlife photography and conservation photography, which has genuinely given me a sense of purpose I wasn’t expecting.

Recently my grandma told me something I never knew, my grandpa used to photograph wildlife too, back in the Netherlands. Every year during the rut, when the deer in the Veluwe forest would gather for mating season, he’d head out and photograph them, along with everything else living there.

I’m glad I get to share this with my dad too, he’s into wildlife photography as well, mostly birds. One of my dreams for the coming years is to finally go to Kruger together and spend some time photographing side by side.

The first few slides here are my photos. After that are scans of photographs my grandpa took, straight out of the camera. The second to last is a photo of my grandpa with his camera. The last is a photo of my dad out photographing.

The following photos are scans of photographs my grandpa took
