400 million years to carve. Two hours to walk.
Watkins Glen's gorge trail stacks waterfall after waterfall into one of the most photographed — and most underrated — hikes in the Finger Lakes. Stone staircases, cut-through tunnels, and mist that's been rising off this same rock since long before anyone thought to name it. Swipe through the stretch that made it impossible to keep the camera down.

One stop on a full-time road. Follow to see where the lens goes next.

Some hikes are meant to be handed down. Starting at the old mill above the gorge, the trail drops through a deeply wooded stretch before reaching Lucifer Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park. The climb back up tells its own story, 222 steps past waterfall after waterfall, each one a reason to pause before the next flight. It's the kind of trail a parent walked as a kid, and one worth bringing your own family back to. The Finger Lakes have a way of turning a single afternoon into a tradition. Save this for the next generation's trip to Ithaca, and tag the family you'd bring here first.

The man who bought Alaska for two cents an acre called this house in Auburn, NY home — and everyone said he was a fool for it. Built in 1816, the Seward House still holds five generations of original family history. His wife Frances helped shelter freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, with Harriet Tubman's home still standing in the same community. The same night Lincoln was assassinated, an intruder attacked Seward in this very house. He survived — and kept serving as Secretary of State.
Save this for your next Finger Lakes trip.

There's only one place left on Earth where this exists, unaltered. Willard Memorial Chapel in Auburn, NY holds the only complete, unaltered Tiffany-designed chapel interior in the world — stained glass, gold leaf, mosaic floors, and furnishings all handcrafted specifically for this room in 1892. Most Tiffany interiors like this didn't survive intact. This one did.

She handed me her cell phone and asked, "could you take some photos of my family?'
And I lit up like a Christmas tree.

You see, we were in Panama Beach, Fl in our travels this past fall. We had finally wandered out to the actual beach, my partner was sick and I had been diagnosed with pneumonia 4 days prior. While we were within walking distance of the beach, well, lets just say we didn't feel like going for much of a walk. But I finally said, lets just go down and put our feet in the sand at least...we can just sit there and at least be able to say we were at the beach.

When this lady approached me out of the blue, I quickly calculated that I had 4 days of prescription meds in me and was probably not contagious anymore before I reached for the phone. Ten minutes earlier I was wondering if I could even make it to the beach, but with that phone camera in my hands and the possibility of capturing family portraits for them, well ... my partner said I just lit up. He had never seen this in me before.

I did a full session with them in about 10 minutes...full family, mom and dad alone, kids alone, mom with daughter, dad with son, etc, etc.... and reluctantly handed back the phone. I realized then that I didn't have the ability to actually edit the images for them. Couldn't complete the session with post processing. :(

But my partner was amazed in the change in me. I was so excited to create family memories again.

Which is why I have decided to come out of retirement. Creating family portraits is in my DNA, I think. I really love creating a moment in time for families to cherish.

I will be here in the local Clearwater Beach area through spring and would love to create a family portrait for you and your loved ones. Visit my website for all the info. Professional Beach sessions for $350 including the images. Check it out.
