Kim Grosz My images are available as wall art, home decor and personal items through my web site listed below.

Most of my photography features nature in all her glory as my personal hobbies include hiking and cycling in the mountains near my home as well as travelling to many beautiful countries around the world. Some products such as greeting cards, cell phone covers, tote bags are an inexpensive way to both enjoy art and gift it to others. I hope you enjoy perusing my photos as much as I enjoyed capturing them!

Yesterday was likely the last Palm Springs hike as it’s about to get real toasty again. The Murray Canyon Hike was a new one for me and one I will do again. An in and out hike with plenty of palms, great rock formations and a pathside brook, it is also a bit of a confusing hike. The brochure given at the toll booth (on Agua Caliente land) says it’s an easy hike but both AllTrails and my hiking book say moderate. IMHO the first part is definitely easy but about half way the signage gets sparse, there’s some boulders to navigate and the end of the trail comes before you get to the promised Seven Falls. Many switchbacks over the creek so be warned that if you have bad balance you might be getting your feet wet! I would definitely avoid this hike after heavy rains.

My daughter is raising money to bring her one woman show “I love the smell of gasoline” to Edmonton this March!

In the show she grapples with her Alberta oil-industry roots within the current environmental emergency. Her project was born of a “frustration with divisive Canadian politics, rampant hypocrisy, and a lack of team spirit when facing impending doom.”

When I saw the play in Toronto I was so proud of her, at how thoughtfully she captured our personal and national relationships to oil and gas — especially as Albertans!

You can donate at pencilkitproductions.com/i-love-the-smell-of-jet-fuel Every dollar helps pay for flights, accommodation and salaries for projection artists etc.

Salvation Mountain is an artistic endeavour by Leonard Knight, started in 1984 to testify about God’s love. He worked on this creation in the desert for 30 years using found and donated materials. Aside from the fact that the whole thing is literally built on sand, the other amazing thing to me is the attention to detail and the texture layered in.

Located in Niland, it is about 1 1/2 hour drive from Palm Springs. Since my last visit in 2019, the denizens from Slab City nearby have crept into the surrounds giving the whole site a bit of a dystopic Mad Max feel. No charge to enter, donation appreciated. You can make a perfect little road trip out of this visit by stopping at the Salton Sea waterfront, seeing the art in Bombay Beach and if you are brave dropping into Slab City. (I did go there in 2019 but I’m not feeling like it would be that safe now: not sure if it’s me or our world that’s changed to make me say that!)

Here I am with the perfect shot but it’s already Saturday… oh well, what can a girl do? This is the surprisingly large show of water at the end of the Tahquitz Canyon trail. Lots of snow melt I guess. So refreshing and cool after the plus 30 degree days we’ve been having here in Palm Springs. Some were wading into the pools and even swimming… wow, did I mention this is SNOW melt?? Details of this hike: only 3ish km but lots of BIG steps, situated on Indian land so there’s a fee ($15 per adult) and conveniently located right in town.

Haven’t been into Indian Canyons for a hike for a couple years but I’ve always loved the Victor Loop which takes you high up overlooking the palm canyon and then brings you down into the oasis. Just over 5 km, I suggest doing the trail clockwise so as to do the elevation in the sun first and descend into the cool palms at the end when you need the break. A few stream crossings, blooming cactus, many lizards and a snake sighting adds to the interest of this historical place where Cahuilla Indians spent the hot summer months. The fee to enter is $12 per adult but only $7 for seniors 62+. Interpretive hikes and ranger talks available.

Hi, it’s me, Barbie! Let me tell you about my adventure in Anza Borrego Desert State Park yesterday with Ken (isn’t he so handsome? Reminds me of Christopher Reeves….) We had heard conflicting reports on the flower situation there. We did see lots of purple sand Verbena, a few desert lilies, and the Ocotillo were definitely looking fine. We checked out the Off Highway parks along the way to watch the dune buggies and all terrain vehicles manoeuvre in the sand. My, it was windy though, my hair was just a blowin’! We also saw a cute little village of vintage campers in a rainbow of colours but the pink one was my fave. We also drove along some bluffs and saw the Salton Sea. I don’t know how they get those big trailers out there?!?! We had such a nice day seeking the flowers but my last photo shows the bloom in the empty lots in Palm Springs….. we didn’t need to venture so far out to see a big show!

I would have loved to take my camera into this A. Quincy Jones designed estate from the 1960’s. It still has all the Billy Haines furniture, a great art collection and more memorbilia/photos of Presidents and Royalty than I’ve ever seen outside of a museum. The main, open concept living area alone is 6000 sq. feet! It was easy to imagine past Presidents playing a round of golf with the Annenbergs and visiting royalty and then retiring for drinks on the patio.

However, I can only offer a shot of the house from the immaculate 200 acre landscape around it as security guards strictly enforce the no photos rule.

Our interest in seeing the inside of the Annenberg Estate in Sunnylands was piqued a couple years ago but it’s a hard ticket to get! On the 15th of each month at exactly 9:00 a.m. PST you can sign in to buy a timed tour. Since each tour only has up to 9 people you can imagine how quick the sell out is. Further reducing the availability is that the estate still hosts events and dignitaries so not all days in a month are even on the calendar. If you decide to do this I suggest you set a reminder for yourself for the 15th of the month BEFORE you are in the Coachella Valley.

If you don’t get your ticket, it is still worth visiting the Sunnylands Visitor Centre which has some great exhibits about the estate and its design as well as more gorgeous gardens and views. (Also outdoor yoga every Friday at 10:00 a.m.)

Glow in the Park is an illuminated and animated display of gorgeously colourful animal shaped lanterns. On a warm California evening it was a delight to wander through the bright exhibit. Unexpectedly uncrowded (it was adults only night) one could stop to savour any particular grouping and take unimpeded photos. A 6:30 start meant we even got there in time to capture a few of the animals before full on dark set in!

It’s not everyday one gets to play with their Barbies from childhood! My sister brought the grand haul to Palm Springs and we dressed Barbie up in swimsuits and cocktail dresses so they could party with their friends. I can’t guarantee they won’t be showing up again in my feed wearing other attire… stay tuned!

After all the rain earlier everyone is expecting some major flower action in the desert. You have to whisper the word “superbloom” for fear of setting off a stampede! But even though my friends and I are talking about a trip to Anzo Borrego, one really doesn’t have to travel too far: the empty fields and highway ditches close to the city are filled with colourful blossoms.
