Michelle was one of the very first friends I made upon moving to Denver, and so when she met Eric I was elated for her. They both share a passion for the outdoors, from long off-road trips in The Beast, to climbing and hiking all the way at the end of the world (fin del mundo) together. They complement each other in all the best ways, while keeping each other grounded likewise.

So when Michelle said she wanted to do an engagement shoot in a snowstorm, I was all for it; I love shooting in unique and challenging situations and locations. We had to book our photography permit a week in advance at Denver Botanical Gardens and managed to time it with one of that February's largest snow storms. As a result, we had the gardens entirely to ourselves and got some epic shots with the falling snow in the urban oasis. I'm glad I was able to execute on her vision and she and Eric were ecstatic with the photos.

The weather is often unpredictable in Colorado, and you don't get the coastal sunsets like in California, but it makes for dramatic photos in another kind of way. Their wedding ceremony in Telluride later that year was just as unique and epic - no spoilers now, so look for that post soon!

January can be one of the best times for an engagement shoot in the bay area on the coast (as long as you're not dealing with an atmospheric river 😅) because you're less likely to get the marine layer during sunsets. Last January I met up with Vy and Coy at the iconic Sutro Baths for their engagement shoot, and we had phenomenal light and weather that day.

You immediately feel the joie de vivre between Vy and Coy with how they make each other laugh and how comfortable they are together. Combine that with the beautiful sunset at Sutro Baths and you can't ask for anything more 🌅.

Happy new year! I'm only about a year behind my social media now 😅. Today we're sharing some photos from Laura and Sam's engagement shoot at Muir Woods National Monument. Laura and Sam were a bit nervous at first, as like most people they hadn't had professional photos taken together, but they quickly warmed up and were seamlessly moving from one pose to the next with their natural warmth together 😎.

We were very honored to capture their wedding last May at Thomas Fogarty Winery - look for that post coming soon!

Everyone in Denver knows of the clocktower downtown, but did you know you could have weddings inside of it? I didn't know either until Allie and Taylor invited me to photograph their wedding there last January, and it was great to see them again from Mari's wedding over 2 years ago (!). The Denver Clocktower a very unique space spread across 5 floors, starting with the 17th floor (the last stop of the elevator). Everyone was getting their stair steps in navigating throughout the reception 🥵 but it was worth it!

Allie and Taylor love to collect silhouette photos of themselves together, and the clock face made the perfect backdrop. We also had amazing views of the downtown and front range, though the balconies were like 2 feet wide making formal shots slightly challenging 😅.

I'm glad I was able to do their wedding for them during these challenging times with the pandemic, and wish them all happiness and love together!

A few months ago I met up with Erin and Lawrence at Sutro Baths for some formal portraits of them together as it had been years since they've had any done professionally (since their wedding essentially). While families often book me for family photos, I don't see couples (or individuals!) booking professional photos for themselves as often and yet it's a great idea to do so! We had Sutro Baths largely to ourselves on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon and got tons of great pictures together.

When was the last time you had professional photos taken for yourself that wasn't a company headshot? 😄

A blessed congratulations to Grace and Eric on their marriage! It was an honor to capture their wedding at the Chinese Church in Christ where their family, friends, and church community gathered. It also wasn't the first time I've been to a wedding with a Powerpoint presentation; it was thoughtfully crafted by Grace's dad to help with the group photos 😅. After the bento-style lunch from Sheng Kee, we headed to the nearby Palo Alto Baylands for their formals in the warm evening light.

I also especially love the ring boxes they had custom created: they both open like a camera aperture with a twisting motion!

Joyous wishes to them both on their next chapter together!

Cheers to Ruth and Jeremy on their engagement! After moving around a bit around California for different jobs, they ended up in the bay area where Jeremy also works at Stanford! For their engagement shoot, we met up at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, known for its Seal Cove Cypress Tree Tunnel.

We had excellent weather and evening light -- and the perfect backdrop for Ruth and Jeremy to explore the trails together. They were both playfully open to trying out different poses and you can easily tell how comfortably they settled into the shoot with each other.

We'll be looking forward to seeing them in March for their wedding!

Congrats to Ellen and Jim on their wedding! Jaclyn and I are super happy for them both, and it was great to be back at Stanford and the Memorial Church like old times. It was also great to see several familiar faces at their wedding, including several people from Jaclyn's grad school department.

Shooting weddings for Stanford friends and friends of friends (with Jaclyn's help) was how I (or we) got started in wedding photography ~10 years ago, so it's always especially nostalgic when I shoot on campus. I've never counted before until just now, but I've shot at least 28 weddings for specifically Stanford friends and affiliates over these 10 years 😮, plus several more family, birthday, and graduation shoots! Maybe I should take Dani's suggestion and try to get Stanford Magazine to do a piece on Jaclyn and I 😅. Don't worry Berkeley friends, I am always happy to shoot your weddings too 🥰.

Nonetheless, we wish Ellen and Jim lots more happiness together in the years to come, and hope to see them again soon in the bay area!

Congrats to Shannon and Albert on their marriage! It was a huge honor for me and Jaclyn to be their guests and wedding photographers at their wedding in Laguna Niguel, with me having known Albert since middle school. It was also great to see several high school classmates I haven't seen in around 15 years, and we connected again as if it was just yesterday.

While the California coast was being its usual self with a thick marine layer, we were just happy it stopped raining for that weekend for their wedding day.

We wish Shannon and Albert the best together, and hope to see them again in So Cal soon!

Congrats to Rachel and Jonathan on their engagement! I am extremely happy for my brother Jonathan and welcome Rachel to the family. Rachel's family is also in Colorado, so while they flew out to visit her family, we did their engagement shoot at the Flatirons in Boulder where we got some great morning light.

It was great to see how they share the same sense of humor and had a ton of fun during the shoot as they shared inside jokes with each other. I'm looking forward to attending and shooting their wedding next year!

On a business update note: as you may have heard from other (wedding) photographers, it's been incredibly busy lately and we're booking 4+ months out right now for engagement/family/event shoots. Omedetogozaimasu Grace and Eric on their engagement! Meeting them in person for the first time at their engagement shoot, I saw how they just seemed made for each other and how at ease they are in front of the camera together. They had arranged with Hakone Gardens in Saratoga for a private shoot at the estate before it opened to the public, so we had the entire place to ourselves in the warm morning light.

None of us had been to Hakone Gardens before -- even me who has wanted to shoot there for years but never had the right opportunity come up. That time finally came in July and we explored the picturesque estate and gardens for the first time together; there were so many gorgeous spots that it really became hard to choose from them all in the time we had before the gardens fully opened. I'm trilled to be working with them on their wedding in October this year!
