Here is another bonus of shooting with an off camera flash...shutter drag. This was taken with a shutter speed of 1/15 and me moving the camera slightly as I took the shot. The movement created the blur and streaked lights. Gwyneth Plowman's cool sequined dress added the tiny streaks from reflecting the light of the strobe. She is in focus, because the strobe freezes your subject when it fires. You can't do this with a continuous LED light. Thanks to www.instagram.com/theblackcatcreativeofficial

I've been trying to hold off on these shots I took with Michelle for her birthday, but just had to share one. When shooting, I usually take "test" shots each time we change a set-up, and tell my subject to just relax until I get my settings dialed in. Often I end up liking these shots, because they are candid and tend to be more serious. I think this was one of those times. 💜

Sometimes people ask me why I shoot with OCF (Off Camera Flash) during a bright sunny day. There are a few answers to that question; it allows me to shoot at times and places I otherwise couldn't, it eliminates unwanted shadows on faces, I can control background exposure. However, the number one reason for me is THE EYES. I see lots of beautiful daylight only portrait photos, but the eyes are dead. A properly placed beauty dish and strobe provide that life and spark to the eyes with a catchlight. Here are two images from my recent session with Brittany, that I think can demonstrate what I mean. The image on the left my flash didn't fire for some reason, so you can see how dark Britt is since my exposure was adjusted for the water in the background. The right image she is brought to life with the flash and her eyes sparkle. The water behind her is still visible and not "blown out", because my flash allowed me to exposure her separately while the sun behind her acted as a beautiful hair light. I'd rather NOT lug around my lighting gear, but for me... I just can't shoot any other way. 🤓

Even though we got some great shots with Britt Matthews in this fabulous dress at the Full Heart Rentals offices last week, she also needed some shots on the water for Beachy Beach Real Estate. So, today we headed to Oaks By The Bay park and grabbed some with the water as a backdrop. I was melting in the 95 degree heat, how she managed to shine this brightly is pure magic. 💖
