On September 2, 1985, professional wrestling lost Jay Youngblood, born Steven Romero, at only 30 years of age.

Youngblood became best remembered for his outstanding partnership with Ricky Steamboat in Jim Crockett Promotions. Their team combined Steamboat’s precision and athletic grace with Youngblood’s speed, intensity, and natural babyface fire, creating one of the most respected tag teams of the early 1980s.

Their defining achievement came at Starrcade 1983, where they defeated Jack and Jerry Brisco inside a steel cage to capture the NWA World Tag Team Championship. The match remains one of the most important tag team contests of the territorial era and helped establish Starrcade as a major annual event.

Youngblood also competed across several territories, including Florida, the Pacific Northwest, the AWA, and internationally, carrying the traditional fundamentals of his generation wherever he worked.

He died in Australia after suffering severe medical complications during a tour, including hemorrhagic pancreatitis, organ failure, and a series of heart attacks. His death ended a career that had already earned considerable respect, leaving behind the legacy of an exceptionally gifted wrestler whose partnership with Steamboat remains central to classic tag team history.
