The Tiny Tenants of the Patio
It started with a simple wooden box mounted to the wall last year an invitation waiting for a guest. After months of silence, this spring, a pair of Carolina Wrens finally accepted. For the last two months, I’ve watched them work tirelessly, fluttering back and forth with twigs and soft nesting material, weaving their dedication into every corner of that small space.
For the past two weeks, the silence has been replaced by the persistent, hungry chorus of baby birds. Now, the parents are a blur of motion, darting to and from the house with beaks full of bugs, their energy never wavering despite the exhaustion that must surely settle in.
Watching them, I am reminded that across every corner of this planet, the instinct to nurture is a universal force. Whether large or small, the dedication required to raise the next generation is a profound act of strength. It is a grueling, selfless, and beautiful commitment to life, played out right here on my patio.
