This is the male of the mated pair of coyotes that seem to have taken up residency in our neighborhood. I had my camera out to take photos of the Space X launch when they happened by. It was almost totally dark, so I only managed to get one of them in the photo and it's a bit grainy as I had to bring it up from very dark. So far I have only run into them during the day without my camera... I am glad they seem healthy and free of mange as so often the coyotes are in bad shape.

Sometimes you just get lucky with what you come across on any given walk. This afternoon was one of those times when I observed a small (maybe teenager?) skunk crossing the stream in the Meadowbrook area of the Arboretum. It was having trouble scrambling up the big rock on the opposite side of the stream but eventually managed to climb up. It was so cute, but definitely one to keep at a distance - good thing for long lenses :) 6/23/26

This teenager gosling is growing it its flight feathers 6/17/26. I thought it was interesting that the feather shafts were blue so I googled it and got this answer: Gosling feather shafts appear blue because they are developing pin feathers. When new adult flight or tail feathers are growing, they are heavily engorged with blood to promote rapid growth. This blood supply is encased in a tough, bluish, keratin-based waxy sheath. As the feather grows longer and reaches maturity, the sheath crumbles away or the bird preens it off, revealing the fully formed feather.
