Aurora Borealis photographed from the west Paso Robles hills. Earth is experiencing a strong G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm, caused by a recent, intense Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun allowing auroras to appear much further south.

But more recent research has turned to the sadder side of their lifelong love: the grief of widowhood. After the death of a mate, these canids exhibit clear behavioral and brain changes, which researchers hope may help explain how stress and loss affect other long-term, pair-bonded species—including humans.

Piedras Blancas Rookery with the on 12/14/25 with Piedras Blancas Light Station in the background. The name Piedras Blancas means “white rocks” in Spanish. The large rock is white due to bird droppings (guano). Soon the beach will be full of elephant seals returning from the ocean for birthing & mating. Friends of the Elephant Seal

First Elephant Seal pup of the season, photographed at 2 days old on 12/14/25. Birthing season peaks in January and continues into February. This pup may look skinny now, but the average pup grows from 70lbs to 300lbs in one month!
