Getting settled back in after my trip to France and working on some painting. Started this one in a tiny village in Provence and added a few finishing touches here at home. The sun was reflecting off this building making the peachy-orange color glow. I also loved all the terracotta pots along the path.

Temps got down to double digits - high of 99!
Spent part of the day packing so just walked a bit around Montmartre where we’re staying. Went to the “I love you” wall, but barriers are blocking access to it. I had read about it a couple weeks ago so wasn’t surprised. Made it all the way up one staircase to immediately find ourselves at the base of another. My thighs were feeling it! There was a guy playing accordion with his cat draped over it so we listened for awhile. This ends our France adventures, or so we thought. Woke up early to get ready to head to the airport and had messages that our flight was canceled and we were booked for another flight tomorrow. Was looking forward to arriving home today, but for now we’re snuggled in a hotel near the airport.

France Trip - Day 15
Only 100 degrees today.
Started the day at Petit Palais. Super cold air conditioning for the win! A visit to the Giacometti Institute followed. I had seen photos of his studio but didn’t realize how tiny it was. The work that came out of such a small space is amazing. Walking through the Catacombs was indescribable. I’ve wanted to visit since I first heard about it when I was around ten years old. Bonus on a hot day is the temperature is a steady 57 degrees. Finished the day with a Seine river cruise. One more day before heading home.

France Trip - Day 14
High today was 106!
First up was a walk by the Eiffel Tower then on to the Rodin Museum where I got to see three more Van Gogh paintings. Picasso Museum was next and a walk by The Centre Pompidou. Was looking forward to visiting this museum when this trip was first planned, but it closed in October for renovations - for FIVE years. So I settled for seeing the outside. Just means I’ll have to come back. T

France Trip - Day 12-13
Took train back to Paris and didn’t do much else that day other than walk around a bit. Staying in Montmartre and visited the Dali Museum which focuses on his sculptures along with some drawings. Caught a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower and walked around Sacre-Couer. Moulin Rouge is near the hotel and so is the cemetery where Degas is buried, so had to visit his grave. People have left paintbrushes and pencils. Paris is experiencing a massive heat wave with temps over 100 every day, so not walking around
doing as much as I would like. Many places are also closing early due to the heat and no air conditioning.

France Day 10-11
Spent two days in Arles, where Van Gogh lived for more than a year. It’s a beautiful city and could see why he chose it to try to start an artist colony. Stood on the spot where he painted my favorite - Starry Night Over the Rhône. Wanted to visit all the Van Gogh sites/markers, but France is in a massive heat wave and it was just too hot for that much walking, even for someone from Mississippi. Did visit L’espace Van Gogh and Fondation Vincent Van Gogh. A nice surprise at Fondation was a show that featured two Van Gogh paintings from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as well as three Picasso drawings.

France Day 6-9
Spent time in several villages in Provence including Roussillon which sits on the largest vein of ochre in the world. So much pigment for so much paint! Also visited the market at Isle sur la Sorgue and did some more sketching and painting along the banks of la Sorgue. Tomorrow it’s off to Arles for a couple days to see the Van Gogh sites and walk and paint where he did.

France Day 5
Visited St. Remy today and stood in Van Gogh’s bedroom and studio at the the asylum where he admitted himself and produced many of his most well known works. Walking through the building and grounds where he lived during his most turbulent yet productive year was surreal.

Van Gogh has always been an inspiration to me and I have studied his life and work for some time. I am currently on a painting trip in France and will be following his life here in reverse. First, I had to visit the Musee d’Orsay to see my favorite painting of his - Starry Night Over the Rhône. The Van Gogh room was by far the most crowded in the museum and never dwindled. I wish I could have spent more time with these works studying his brushstrokes, but I didn’t want to interfere with others there to view them.

Today I am in Provence and will visit St. Remy tomorrow to see the asylum where he admitted himself and stayed for a year. Painting on the grounds where he created many of his amazing works will be incredible. Next weekend I will spend two days in Arles, where he lived for more than a year and stand in the spot where he painted Starry Night Over the Rhône, a dream moment for me. After that will be a return to Paris and a stay in Montmartre where he lived before moving south.

This will be an incredible journey, and one that will stay with me long after I leave.
