One of the biggest surprises of parenting is realizing how much of it you don’t remember.

Not the big milestones. Those tend to stick.

It’s the ordinary days that slowly blur together. The little moments that seemed so familiar while you were living them that you never thought to memorize them.

That’s why I photograph families the way I do.

I’m not just trying to create beautiful portraits. I’m trying to preserve the feeling of this season, so years from now, you can find your way back to it.

Every family has its own personality.

Some spend the whole session running laps through the house. Some are happiest curled up together on the couch.

Some kids want to show me every room in the house. Others are happiest snuggled into a parent’s shoulder. Some are wonderfully dramatic. Others quietly take it all in.

No two sessions are the same, and that’s how it should be.

I’m not trying to make every family look the same. I’m trying to photograph the little things that make your family feel like yours.

Years from now, I want you to look back and think, “Yep… that’s us.”

Life doesn’t stop with a new baby.

It changes, of course. But before long, your new little one is simply part of the rhythm of your family.

The baby gets passed from one set of arms to another. Big sister climbs onto the bed to check on them. Everybody slowly settles into this new version of family life.

And that’s exactly what I want to remember.

Not just a beautiful portrait of your baby, but the way they fit into your family from the very beginning.

When we think about family photos, we usually think about preserving the people. But over the years, I’ve realized we’re preserving something else, too.

The home where this chapter of your life unfolded.

The bedroom where the kids jumped on the bed every morning. The living room where everyone gathered to play games. The family dog who was always close by.

One day the furniture will be different. The walls might be painted another color. You may even live somewhere else entirely.

But these photographs will bring you right back to this place and this season of your life in a way nothing else can.

That’s one of the reasons I’ll never stop encouraging families to invite me into their homes.
