I try not to share all of my photographs immediately after a trip. I like to spread them out over time—it gives me a chance to revisit the places, encounters, and little moments that made each journey memorable.

One of my favorite excursions in Costa Rica was exploring by boat, traveling along the river and seeing the jungle from an entirely different perspective. As we made our way into one of the narrow tributaries, dense tropical vegetation seemed to close in around us.

That’s where I spotted this Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, standing quietly on a branch above the river. Filtered sunlight was finding its way through the canopy, illuminating the heron against the deep greens of the jungle. For just a moment, it lifted its head toward the light—as if it had noticed it too.

I still have plenty more photographs from Costa Rica waiting to be shared. 🌿📷

Catching quick, darting fish is a skill that takes time to master. Until these young Clark’s Grebes learn to fish for themselves, their parents stay busy providing the meals—like this freshly caught fish being passed from parent to chick.

For now, fishing lessons can wait. Breakfast is served.

At first glance, it could almost be mistaken for a tiny hummingbird—but this beautiful visitor is a white-lined sphinx moth. With wings flashing soft shades of pink and brown, it hovered beside the thistle and uncoiled its remarkably long proboscis to reach the nectar within. Nature has a wonderful way of hiding extraordinary details in the smallest encounters. 🦋🌸

I had seen images of this place that looked like they belonged on another planet. After researching the mystery, I learned it was Crowley Lake, tucked into the high desert of the eastern sierras. I was already out along California's Highway 395 corridor chasing fall color when I decided to make a detour one afternoon.

The road leading in was impassable without a high-clearance 4x4, so I parked and set out on foot, my dog trotting at my side. We pushed hard across the open plain, not knowing the distance, desperate not to lose the afternoon light. After winding back and forth across that windswept plateau, the lake finally appeared below, and there, at the water's edge, were the columns I had come for.

We slipped and slid down the steep hillside, scrambling to the beach as the sunset ignited the sky. Standing before these formations, I was struck silent. Nature had spent thousands of years carving towering volcanic columns from the ancient lakebed, each one a monument to geological patience and raw power.

The afternoon glow fell across each column like a blessing, and the air carried that cool, sage-sharpened bite of a Sierra evening. The water beside me reflected the colors of the sky. I raised my camera, and the world went quiet.
