Postcards from Rome. 🇮🇹
They conquered so we came to see.
There is no denying that here lies a living history that is deeply embedded into the fabric of the city and its people. Everything feels new, but at the same time comforting and familiar.

Do here’s day one of our family trip that finally made it out of the group chat. I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to make these memories with them while they are older now (and can handle a ton of walking). There are not nearly enough words to perfectly describe such a historical place. Perhaps things as such aren’t meant to be explained away, but instead experienced. So I’ll leave it here to show in pictures because it’s kind of what I do best anyway- at least around this corner of my world. Meet you in the countryside next. 🍇

Ask me how I feel about having a second left arm?

Okay, okay the term is actually just a "left arm". But I'm here to tell you that I'm not quite sure how I went without this kind of support for so long. While I've had "support" in my business before and I'm so grateful for all the help I've received, I knew it was time to have something more permanent.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So over the last few weeks I have been training my new gal!(spoiler alert: some of you have already meet her! Isn't she just the best!?!). I'm not going to lie, this wasn't easy to do in the middle of spring busy season. We haven't even really scratched the outer layers of important systems and processes yet. But things have been so wonderful and I'm just so thankful. In all of that we've been working on figuring out what areas of Marie Holmes & Co she feels most comfortable and where she shines... which is truly the most difficult thing because she is just a rockstar at EVERYTHING honestly! She will be communicating with clients, attending some shoots and creating things. She gets me and knows what's in my brain even before I say anything. So..... I guess you could say I've found "My Person" and it's the most magical feeling.

Here are two big takeaways for you if you may be considering hiring someone to help you in your business.

DO NOT WAIT to add support.
Small business owners become small business owners because we like the satisfaction of being in control of everything we do. It's a honeymoon phase that wears off quick when you are the only one doing all the things most of the time. Releasing that tight grip is both good for your growth and overall well-being.

Write down all of your systems NOW. Even if you're not ready to add someone yet. No matter how small a business you are document every single step that you do.
You'll thank me later for this one ;)

I've thought a lot about anxiety and fear during this time. What should be considered a normal amount, what is an over exaggeration and what it might look like with not enough natural fear.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've learned that- or rather I should say that I'm still learning that fear is a place. You have to decide for yourself if you want to have it take you somewhere for something good or place that feels really dark and scary. The point here is that YOU get to decide.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My approach with Covid has been using fear for good. Doing my part not knowing fully where this thing was going but holding hope that there is a bigger, brighter side just waiting around the corner. Instead of having my fears being unwarranted, I wanted them to feel welcomed in exchange for the greater good. I think back to when I started my business and what that felt like. I had real fears with it because it was so risky, but they were never dark. That's how I knew everything was going to be okay and that my fear was neither irrational or even scary but that it was growth in disguise. Oh silly fear... always pretending to be something it isn't!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've also thought about what I would be giving up it in exchange from not having enough fear. The thought of that has never sat well with me. And hear me out... as someone who is naturally a VERY anxious person, "a worrier" if you will, this whole experience has taught me to be LESS anxious. Anxiety can often be fueled by losing control of something and let's just say in one jammed packed control-less of year my overly amplified pit of anxiety tank has ran out of gas. Now it's time to let natural anxiety run it's course when it needs to.

This week has been a blur and it’s not even Friday yet 😬

Here’s a quick reminder though that the 2021 Motherhood Session experience at the studio will be released between tomorrow and Sunday! I’m still tinkering with logistics and a few new things currently happening at the studio. But once we’re ready to go, tickets holders will be getting all the details and sign up links between that timeframe first.

Now, if you popped into stories last week you might have heard that this year is going to be extra extra magical (and safe!) ✨ 🌺. I work with a florist each year and every install is always so beautiful but this one..... I think is going to top the cake!!! There’s a little inspo and theme in mind (hint: “english garden”) and it’s just going to be so stunning!! April 24th can get here fast enough!

What does this mean for your interaction with the me during your portrait session?

Absolutely nothing changes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a family, newborn photographer and small business owner, the health and safety of my clients is my outmost priority. I will continue to mask myself during all portrait sessions in accordance with CDC guidelines. Masking is not comfortable (especially when I’m chasing after toddlers indoors and outdoors 😅). Nor is it anything, anyone actually finds joy in doing, we can agree to that. But there is no responsibility greater as a business owner to ensure that every client not feels safe in my presence, but cared for *especially* when I’m working with the tiniest of humans with brand new immune systems. The thought of letting my guard down at such a time, seems careless and is opposite of what I intend to convey in my interactions with people.

So much work has been done and we’re getting closer to the finish line. Strangely, I can almost feel us there already after such a long year. But in the same breathe, there is still so much to do. Although it looks a little different, businesses can operate safely while navigating through these very strange and hard times, we’ve been doing it this far anyway.
