Happy 100th Birthday to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Technically, the 100th anniversary was on July 1, but today the city celebrated by closing the bridge this morning (July 11).
The Benjamin Franklin Bridge opened on July 1, 1926, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, often known as the sesquicentennial (different from the semiquincentennial we celebrated this year). At the time of completion, it was the world’s longest suspension bridge with a span of 7,456 feet, a title it held until 1929. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge was originally called the “Delaware River Bridge,” but was renamed the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in 1956. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1982 in recognition of its historical and cultural significance.
