Anyone with a phone can snap a picture of food, but does that makes them a food photographer?

No, here’s why.

Cameras don’t see food the same way our eyes do. What looks good in person doesn’t necessarily translate directly into a beautiful image.

Food photographers dedicate their time to studying lighting and composition (among other things) to create the perfect conditions to capture food at its best.

Take this pasta, for instance; a low angle shows off the pesto's texture and the burrata's creaminess. Having the light come from the back right corner adds depth and dimension. Shooting it from overhead wouldn’t have the same effect.

I try to get the food perfect on camera, but sometimes it doesn’t cooperate. to the rescue!

The original photo had some bubbles and breaks in the blueberry glaze (swipe to view), but a few minutes with the spot healing brush cleaned them up nicely. Learning Photoshop is part of my commitment to continued learning and one piece of value I bring to client partnerships.
