Exist in pictures.

I am currently digitally archiving thousands of family photos. It is a months-long process that I love doing. I am grateful that photos of great grandparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents exist. They tell a story of families.

As a portrait photographer I not only want to just capture someone’s likeness in the now, but want to preserve it for the future. I hope that decades from now Len and Maya’s children and grandchildren will look back on these engagement photos of them from the beginning of their life together and realize how lucky they are see to see glimpses of the past.

I don’t usually photograph engagement sessions, but when your daughter asks, you oblige.

So I flew out in July to photograph my daughter Maya and her fiancé Len’s engagement session in San Francisco where they live. It was so much fun!

The ballet world is mourning the loss of Michaela DePrince today. She was a star student at The Rock School here in Philly when my daughter Maya was starting her ballet training back in the mid-2000s, and we were all in awe of her skill and stage presence.

She was a war orphan from Sierra Leone and tried to overcome prejudice and discrimination in the ballet milieu. Michaela spent her professional career paving the way for dancers of color and women in ballet.

It is heartbreaking to learn of her passing, and I hope her family can find some solace in knowing how respected Michaela was.

With pain in our hearts, we share the loss of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, whose artistry touched countless hearts and whose spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the world of ballet, and beyond. 

Her life was one defined by grace, purpose, and strength. Her unwavering commitment to her art, her humanitarian efforts, and her courage in overcoming unimaginable challenges will forever inspire us. She stood as a beacon of hope for many, showing that no matter the obstacles, beauty and greatness can rise from the darkest of places.

Though her time with us was far too brief, her brilliance and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were touched by her story, for generations to come. Love and prayers go to her chosen family, friends, and those who loved her.

Michaela Mabinty DePrince made history as the youngest principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, before moving to the Netherlands to dance with the Dutch National Ballet. Her career progressed at Boston Ballet upon her return to the United States, where she continued captivating audiences with her performances.

Through her memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, DePrince shared her inspiring journey of resilience and triumph, which has been translated into multiple languages and published in twelve countries. Her follow-up book, Ballet Dreams, further solidified her impact, extending her influence far beyond the stage.

DePrince was also a dedicated humanitarian, advocating for children affected by conflict and violence. She served as an Ambassador for War Child Holland and hosted her gala, Dare to Dream, dedicated to promoting the well-being and mental health of children living in war zones.

Huge congrats to So Jung Shin of Philadelphia Ballet who was recently promoted to First Soloist. She isn’t just a dancer on stage, but is a creative in her heart. It is an absolute privilege and joy to work with such an incredible artist and to see her ascend the ranks.

Huge congratulations to Sydney Dolan of Philadelphia Ballet, who was recently promoted to Principal dancer!!

I have been watching her since she was a 15-yo dancer in Pennsylvania Ballet II, and was thrilled to photograph her in my studio several years ago.

There was never a doubt that Sydney would ascend the ranks in whichever ballet company she was with, and it’s been wonderful to see her build her career here in Philly with Philadelphia Ballet.
