I’ve been at times accused of having head in the clouds. Many who know me well might think that’s a ridiculous statement. I’m a pretty practical person with a firm grasp on reality. But, I always start the creative process in a place of impracticality.

Constraints are necessary for the creative process to work, but you shouldn’t handcuff yourself at the onset. Whenever you set out to create something, let go of what you think is or is not possible and start thinking about what you dream about. That’s the starting point.

You won’t ever reach that dream. It’s meant to be impossible, but it allows you to make decisions to aim in that general direction. Constraints will come. Deadlines, budgets, the laws of physics, etc, will have to be applied. Overcoming those constraints is where true creativity takes place.

If you start only with what’s possible, you’re only mimicking things other people have done. Do the impossible. Let others mimic you.

Why are senior portraits important?

There are milestones in life where we have an opportunity to not only look ahead to what’s next, but look back on the path we took to get there. I was well into adulthood before I learned that lesson.

I didn’t celebrate milestones as much as I should have - I was always looking beyond. Beyond is unknown. It’s exciting, but it’s ultimately unachievable. Beyond changes as you walk your path. Chasing beyond is an exercise in frustration. Appreciating that path to beyond, and who you become while walking it, should be the goal. Senior portraits are a way to remind us of that.

After senior year, a fork in the road presents itself. Some will go to college, some trade school, some will start their careers. It will be the first fork of many in life. Each choice we make when we reach a fork is influenced by the path we took to reach it. We get to choose our beyonds, and more importantly, the path to walk. The more we understand the path we’ve been on, the more informed our decisions become for the next one. A portrait documents that path.

There’s power in being patient.

We’ve become ravenous for immediate results. Technology has made everything faster, but has it made us better?

There’s a process to everything. Just like you can’t skip step in doing your laundry and expect clean clothes, you can’t skip steps in building a brand. Sure, you can reach an audience faster than ever before with social media, but one post doesn’t turn on the client faucet. That takes deliberate effort and time.

A brand story needs to be different enough to be remembered and simple enough to be repeated. That doesn’t happen overnight. There’s a process.

1) What about my business is different from everyone else doing something similar?

2) Where do I tell that story so my potential clients might hear it?

3) What are the different ways I need to tell that story so it’s heard?

None of these steps yield immediate results. This is the foundation you’re building upon. If you remain consistent, clients will come. You have to do the work up front, then force yourself to be a little patient and wait for the cycles to complete. Sort, wash, dry.

People who pursue something greater seem to have their own gravitational pull. The pursuit doesn’t have to be world changing. Just pursuing the betterment of yourself, or your craft, is enough to draw people in.

Think about the people you like to surround yourself with. Are they the people who sit on the sidelines telling you nothing is attainable because of this or that reason? Or are they the ones who’ll stretch as far as they can to test the limits of what’s possible?

Spend enough time around the people from group b and you’ll start to see how they can almost bend their surroundings towards them. As if the universe is throwing them an assist simply for trying. They may not change the world, but they change everyone in their orbit. We can all have that kind of gravitational pull on others. And the cascade effect is world changing.

My very first architecture studio project at Drexel had nothing to do with buildings at all. We all had to be broken of any preconceptions of design and rebuilt with a new visual vocabulary.

We were asked to choose from a series of opposite terms, like order/chaos, and create a series of small matboard models illustrating our interpretation of how they might coexist. We were learning how to take abstract descriptions and turn them into physical realties. I had no aspirations to be a photographer at the time, but that exercise has defined my approach to portraits.

If you want to tell a captivating story, you have to subvert expectations. Adult brains are very efficient in skipping over the known. Repeating the same thing everyone else does is a recipe for being ignored. If you want to be noticed, you have to zig when the rest of the world zags.

Captivating stories break patterns, allow for conflict, and embrace the multitudes that exist in humanity. I probably wouldn’t have taken a woman draped in a shimmery gown and photographed her against the grittiness of an old loading dock if not for that studio project. And I probably would have created a less interesting story as a result.
