Soul’s window.

People tend to do business with those they know, like, and trust. This isn’t a new concept. In the race to automate everything and empowering AI agents to act on your behalf, you risk losing the trust factor humans need.

My marketing is mostly word of mouth. Yes, I’m a frequent social media poster, but that’s primarily to reinforce the messaging behind my brand for those I’ve already met. I don’t post to get discovered. I post to remind.

I want people in my network to see my face, talk to me in person, and look me in the eye. That’s where I build relationships. They can see how I see the world. My style of photography requires the subject to be vulnerable. Whether I’m creating a piece of art for their home or a campaign for their brand, it only works if coming from an authentic place. I have to build trust for it to work.

The AI backlash is already happening. Those who say you have to get onboard or be left behind have a truck full of snake oil or you to buy. We do business with those we know, like, and trust. That happens more often in-person. When we can look someone in the eye.

If it were up to me, everyone would get black and white portraits.

There is certainly a timelessness to black and white. It brings us back to the early days of photography. But, there’s also an emotional connection I don’t think we experience as much when the photo is in color.

Most think of our brains as recording devices. We see, we store, we recall. That’s not how information from the world into our brains actually works. People have confessed to crimes they haven’t committed because memory is not a pure recall mechanism. It’s an interpretation with the data available and it will fill in blanks as necessary.

Black and white photos remove a key piece of data - the color. Without that, your brain will try to fill in some blanks as it interprets what it’s recording. Two things about humans will make the interpretation more emotional: 1) we are emotional beings and 2) we thrive by connecting with other humans.

A black and white portrait will conjure more emotion in you because it’s the easiest thing your brain as access to in order to fill in the gap of data. And a great portrait should make you emotional.

We are a product of the stories we’ve told about ourselves. Those stories can liberate us or confine us.

Just like looking through a window and observing the world go by without engaging in it, we can put up the flimsiest of barriers to prevent us from living the story we want told. This is true in life as it is in business.

The world doesn’t sit still. We can see that from the window. Things are always moving, always changing. Great stories can be told from the window, but you won’t star in it. Everyone deserves to be the star of a story.

I help people tell their own stories. Everyone has a story worth telling. To do that, you’ll have to walk away from the window and enter the world. Sure, it can be chaotic and scary, but it’s much more interesting on the other side. That’s where memorable stories are made.
