My friend Aaron Chang once lied to me. He told me I was a great photographer and that if I wanted to make it, I needed to move to New York, Paris, Milan, or London.

At the time, I was living in San Diego. So I sold everything I owned and moved to Paris with $15,000 in my pocket.

When I arrived, I discovered photographers like Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindbergh, and Nick Knight. That’s when I realized Aaron had lied — these guys were on a completely different level.

Those first few years were a struggle. Eventually, I ran out of money. From Paris, I called my dad and told him I had failed and was planning to move back to the United States.

I’ll never forget what he said:

“I would kill to be in your shoes right now. You’re living your dream, Bobby.”

That one conversation changed everything. If he hadn’t given me that encouragement, I’m not sure I would have stayed the course.
