The smoke from the Evans Creek Fire has hung over this valley for a week. Yesterday afternoon it broke for a few hours, patches of blue between the haze, and by evening the air was clear enough to see the ridgeline again.

Then a little rain, and right as the sun dropped, a rainbow with a hint of a double. I got the drone up for a quick hyperlapse of it fading while the clouds moved across the sky.

The fire's still burning. Crews are still out there right now holding lines and running shifts. A rainbow doesn't change that.

But those few hours of clear air and color were a welcome break. Thank you to every firefighter, hotshot crew, and support person still out on Evans Creek. You're the reason this valley still has clean air to look forward to.

Instant Reply is the Devil 👿👿👿

To anyone and everyone who received a legacy instant reply when you liked or shared one of my posts — I am so so so so sorry. My wife and I just went through her messages and saw how absurdly spammy it was: not just a generic greeting, but the full text of the post getting forwarded to you too.

I never knew this was turned on. It looks like it got switched on automatically when I set up Facebook on my new phone. All automations are now off, and we tested it to confirm nothing is sending anymore.

For context: this is a legacy setting that's only supposed to fire when someone directly messages the Page — not when you like or share a post. If you run a page and want to check your own, go to the Facebook app (on the phone only, it doesn't exist on the desktop version) → Your Business Page → Messaging → click the three dots top right → Automations → Instant Reply.

A quick note on originality, before this turns into a bigger question than it needs to be.

Someone commented on last night's post: 'Please give credit to the Roxy Ann Live stream from YouTube. They are the ones that showed this live last night because I watched it. Ripping them off is just a jerk move.'

To be clear: everything I post is shot and processed by me, no exceptions, unless my wife and I are both working on something (and then she is credited!). Last night's photos came from my own camera, my own vantage point, standing in one spot for an hour at midnight, and I have over 500 RAW files in Lightroom to prove it, timestamps and all. For reference, the Roxy Ann Peak skycam that was mentioned is shooting from a completely different angle and at a much lower resolution than what I'm producing here. It's not physically possible for these to be pulled from that feed.

Multiple people capturing the same sky from different spots isn't plagiarism or ripping another off. I don't mind questions, but I do mind accusations built on assumptions instead of evidence. If you're ever unsure whether something is mine, ask - I'll show you the raw files, the metadata, and the process behind it.

We're living in a world flooded with AI-generated slop, and real photographers are constantly having to prove their work is actually real. Please ask before you accuse. One comment gets you an answer - and it's a lot less awkward than being called out in public.

Evan’s Creek Fire, 7/18/26, just before midnight. Shuffle from the Eagle Point water tower Northwest towards the southeast edge of the fire. The cars at the bottom are traveling along crater Lake Highway. Smoke is traveling northeast impacting up to Crater Lake. At the time the fire was about 14,000 acres and 8% contained.

Evans Creek Fire, 7/18/26 just before midnight. Shot from the Eagle Point watertower shooting NW toward the SE edge of the fire. The cars at the bottom are travelling along Crater Lake Hwy.

At the time the fire was ~14,000 acres and 8% contained.

I originally tried to head west to King Mountain, but found it's been turned into private no trespassing land due to the radio towers. Heading back into town I could see the fire as I was south of Table Rocks on I5. After checking the wind patterns I decided to try heading out to Eagle Point to see if there was a view there. As the hour progressed the southerly winds started to shift back in and push smoke back into the valley.
