Would you sleep on a cliff edge with Beetlejuice wandering camp? 🎃

This October, a clifftop above Roosevelt Lake turned into the Haunted Hootenanny

Taruca awnings glowing orange and red, a projector movie on the awning wall, inflatables everywhere, and one very tired stormtrooper.

When the fire burned down, we climbed into the Taruca Dark Rogue 2.0 and woke up to an epic view.

Everyone made it to morning. Mostly.

Roosevelt Dam needed power before it could be built. So they built a tiny dam first.

In 1903, oil was 19¢ a barrel in California and $3.48 by the time a wagon got it to the dam site. The fix: a 7-foot dam on the Salt River, a 19-mile canal through 20 tunnels, and a 220-foot drop into the turbines that powered the whole project.

We stopped by on the way home from the Haunted Hootenanny Halloween campout.

How do you build the world’s tallest masonry dam with no power for miles?

You build a 7-foot dam first.

In 1903, oil cost 19¢ a barrel in California and $3.48 by the time a wagon hauled it to the dam site. So the Reclamation Service dammed the Salt River, sent it 19 miles through a canal and 20 tunnels, and dropped it 220 feet into turbines that powered the construction of Roosevelt Dam.

You build a smaller dam first.

In 1903 the brand-new Reclamation Service started on Roosevelt Dam, way out in the Arizona backcountry. Fuel came in by wagon, and oil that cost 19¢ a barrel in California cost $3.48 by the time it reached the dam site.

So they built this one: a 7-foot diversion dam on the Salt River feeding a 19-mile canal. By the time the water reached the dam site it was running about 220 feet above the river, enough to spin the turbines that powered the cement mill and the construction of Roosevelt Dam itself.

If you pay attention to the patterns of your life, you’ll realize everything always works out. Everything always takes you to a greater destination. You always grow, and the things you think you can’t survive, you somehow make it through. That’s life. Always remember that.

Summer temps are giving way autumn chills, and spots like this are back on the map for us.

This is my favorite time of year, heading into fall weather, and bringing back our favorite desert camp spots.

How long would you wait for this permit? 🔒

Casner Mountain gets one group permit a week, mid-May through mid-October. It’s a narrow ridge between Sycamore Canyon and Red Rock–Secret Mountain, then nearly 2,000 feet of switchbacks in the last 2.5 miles down into Sedona.
