Today was a big day.
We dropped off Elin as she began her mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the next 18 months she’ll be serving in the Chile Santiago North Mission, dedicating her time to serving others, sharing her faith, and falling in love with the people and country.
Back in 1997, I served my mission in Paraguay. When it came time to leave, I ugly cried on the plane because I loved the people so much. I have no doubt Elin will feel that same love for the people of Chile.
As a dad, it’s a strange mix of emotions. We’ll miss her like crazy. But it’s impossible not to feel more excited than emotional. Watching her willingly choose a life of faith, sacrifice, and service is something every parent hopes to see. This is exactly where she needs to be.

The others are from the airport today with her siblings who came to cheer her on here in Arizona, and from Utah, where her older sisters picked her up, took her to lunch, and drove her to the Missionary Training Center.
Knowing every one of her siblings was there for her today fills my heart. I don’t take that for granted. I’m incredibly grateful for the family we’ve been blessed with, and especially for my amazing wife, who has poured so much into helping our kids become who they are. I’m one lucky guy.
The next time we hug Elin, 18 months from now, she’ll have countless stories, lifelong friendships, a new language, and experiences that will shape the rest of her life. Dang I’m so excited for her!!
We love you, Elin. Chile is getting one incredibly sweet missionary. 🇨🇱 I know they’re going to love you as much as we do.
