I spend as much time as I can outdoors...it's something Erin and I really love to do. If I can share some of the amazing things we see, and do what little I can to keep people interested in open space and conservation, then that's a big win. All of the pictures on this page are taken in the wild with no filter, and most of them are from preserves and wildlife sanctuaries in southeastern Pennsylvania. I will try to post great new nature pictures at least once a week. Photos by Randy Richard.

As we get closer to the spookiest day of spooky season, I wanted to share an image of a bird that is often associated with this holiday, the American Crow. Crows have a historical association with death, omens and the supernatural going back to ancient times, and in some cultures, they were believed to carry messages between the living and the dead. Remember to take some time to appreciate the creatures we love to fear this spooky season!

I really enjoyed shooting this weekend as the autumn colors are really starting to pop now. I was able to capture this pretty scene with a Yellow-rumped warbler and Brown Creeper checking each other out. Get out there if you can, these colors won’t last long!

We recently came across this Eastern Box turtle sitting along a trail, and I think this one is a male due to the red eye color. Eye coloration is a common sexual characteristic for box turtles and females will have yellow to brown colored eyes. I don’t usually see them in autumn as they really start to slow down their activity to prepare for hibernation as the temperatures drop in October, so this was a rare but welcome sight for us.

Most of our migrating warblers have already passed through southeast, PA, but Yellow-rumped warblers are still here. In fact, they will overwinter here, so you should be able to find them around all winter. Here’s one enjoying the morning light among some nice fall foliage.

Winter wrens like old-growth dense forests with lot of fallen logs and standing dead trees. In the fall and winter, they become more widespread and move to lower elevation and into more open woods. We have been finding a lot more in our area lately, and this image has some new fall foliage as a backdrop.

Here’s a White-breasted nuthatch with some autumn reds in the foreground. Nuthatches are common feeder birds around here, and they are pretty busy right now taking seeds from your feeder to store them for the winter. You can also find them hanging out with chickadees or titmice. They will actually join their flocks to make it easier to find food, and more birds means it’s easier to keep an eye out for predators. Smart bird!

The leaves are starting to change here in southeast, PA, but we still have a couple weeks to go until peak. Palm warblers are super abundant around here in the fall, and I always try to get a good October shot of one with some nice foliage. This image has more green than I like in a fall image, but I still have a couple more weekends to get out and try for more.

The female Common Yellowthroat has an elegant beauty about her with soft yellow and brown tones, and it matches well with the goldenrod and leaves that are starting to show color. Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year to shoot, and I hope to get a lot more images showing off the yellow, orange and red colors as we get closer to peak.

Today marks a very important day in our history. No…it’s not a government shutdown. Today marks the first day of , 2025!

We are having a Red-breasted Nuthatch irruption year, and I’ve heard them around the neighborhood, so it’s only a matter of time before they are at our feeders. However, this one is from a long weekend trip to Prime Hook NWR earlier this year.

I’m breaking from the fall migration in PA posts for a day to remind everyone that the 2025-2026 Winter Finch Forecast has been released. It’s really well done, so please check it out! The general consensus is that it will be a good year for Redpoll, Evening Grosbeak and Red-Breasted Nuthatch flights.

So, keep an eye on those feeders this fall and winter, because it’s possible that we could get great looks at some of these species this year without having to go all the way to Minnesota. 😊

It’s always a special treat to come across a red fox on a hike. Most of the time they are quite skittish, but this one hung out for a little while and seemed to be very curious about me. Such a nice looking and healthy fox! Happy Friday!

It’s a challenge to photograph warblers in the fall because they are frantic and hyper-focused on feeding to fatten up for their long journey south. It’s also sometimes challenging to identify them in their non-breeding plumage. However, the Black-and-white warbler is easy because they keep the same basic look all year-round, but this one really tried to throw me off by posing as a nuthatch. 😊
