Hello Facebook friends. Tonight's image features one of the most dramatic structures in the Rox. St. Mary's church is a beautiful Gothic style church. Its towering spires can be seen from a lot of the highpoints in the area including St. Mary's Cemetery in Kennedy Township. This church was originally a German parish. It took 4 years to build and was completed and was dedicated in 1905. I always hope that historic landmarks like this building will be maintained as they are a treasure to the community.

Hello Facebook friends. I missed my post yesterday and almost missed it again today, but I am squeezing one in during the final hour. Tonight's image is one of the places we loved that is no longer there. How many of you have memories of summer nights at the Twin Highway Drive In? Drive ins used to be a very popular place for summer entertainment and now sadly, very few are still around. I was sad to see the Twin Highway go and didn't think we needed another gas station. But for my generation, summer fun and summer dates at the drive in will be a lasting memory. How many of you have great drive in memories??

Hello Facebook friends. I am continuing my look back at the Rox today with an image of the Parkway Theater. I can remember going there as a child walking down the big cement steps from Norwood. Things were different in the 50's and there was no worries about letting me walk there myself and stay all day Saturday to take in a double feature, some cartoons and a newsreel (all for about $.25). Ah, I could almost smell the popcorn.

Now let's move on and ask how many of us could remember one of our first dates being there? I have a lot of memories of the old Parkway but have not been in the newly remodeled version. How about you??

Hello again Faebook Friends. Yesterday's image on my look back on growing up around McKees Rocks featured my memories of the neighborhood store. Today, we are going to take a look at a place where almost evryone who grew up around the Rox ate a spaghetti dinner or attended a wedding, shower or graduation party. Today's feature image is of the Tap Club on McCoy Road. I, of course, attended many various activities there but one of them that I best remember is an annual Christmas Party. I don't remember who sponsored it as I was just a young child but I do remember always coming home with a nice toy that Santa handed out.
But how many of you remember that the Tap Club was part of an entertainment activity and challenge??? Well, back in the 50's, there were not a lot of organized summer activities for teenage boys so the older boys in Norwood would see how many times they could thumb a ride from the corner by the Norwood School to the Tap Club - then another ride back to Norwood. It never did become an Olympic event but I guess it kept them busy. Times have changed. I suppose I remember that because on the return trip, they would get out of the car at the stop sign just in front of my house. Just another part of my Norwood memories

As I sit at UPMC, Shadyside waiting for a doctor's appointment, I started thinking about my McKees Rocks post for the day. When I think back on growing up in Norwood, I remember that there were always friends to hang out with and a friendly little family store on almost every corner. In today's post, I am featuring a shot of the building that used to be The Sugar Bowl. Who remembers that place. But one of the stores I remember the most was right across the street from my house on McCoy Road. It was part of an old gas station and they sold pop and candy and chips. My mom would often give me a nickel or a dime to run across the street and make a selection of penny candy which they would patiently put in a paper bag for me. But even at a young age, I had the entrepreneurial spirit and learned that I could earn my own candy money. I would scour the neighborhood collecting empty pop bottles which I would return to the store for the deposit money.

Pictured in today's post is the building which was the location of the Sugar Bowl. One of the black and white images shows my brother, Jerry hanging out with the 2 neighbor boys. In the background, you can see the entrance to the little store across the street. I loved the view of the old gas station and old gas pumps in the 3rd image (which was taken from my front porch).

I hope that you enjoy day 3 of my look back on growing up in the Rox and that it brought back memories for you too.

Hello Facebook Friends! Last night was day #1 of my new images highlighting the landmarks and history of the McKees Rocks area. Many of us grew up here but we sometimes forget the things that made our area such a good place to grow up. And for day #2, what can say McKees Rocks more than a fresh loaf of Mancini's bread. This bread has been around since 1926 and is a big part of McKees Rocks history. Tucked away on a small side street in West Park, Mancini's has been supplying bread to families and restaurants and stores for close to 100 years. How many of you remember getting your loaf of twist or Home Made bread after church to go with Sunday family dinner?
My favorite Mancini Bread memory was shortly after being married, Linda and I both worked in the Rox. One night on the way home, we stopped at Mancini's for a loaf of twist. The aroma of the fresh bread was irresistable so Linda began tearing off pieces and by the time we got home, we had eaten over half of the loaf.

Hello Facebook Friends! I have had many nice comments on my 30 images in 30 days with many people asking me to continue posting so I decided to do a new series. I am changing it up a little and I hope you enjoy it. Some of you know that I lived in Norwood until I was 10 years old (before moving to Kennedy Township). The McKees Rocks area is a big part of my chilldhood. I decided to take a trip down memory lane looking back on the things that I remember about McKees Rocks. My first image is a historic landmark of the Rox area. Today, I am featuring the McKees Rocks Bridge as viewed from high up in Norwood. This bridge was built in 1931 and is 7,293 feet long. It is the longest bridge in Allegheny County and was the location of many drag races back in the muscle car days of the 60's.

I have also included an image of me in front of my Norwood home on McCoy Road. Sadly, the house is no longer there but my memories of my first 10 years there can never be removed.

Hello Facebook friends. Today is day 30 of my 30 days of images. I decided to end the 30 days with another flower image. I captured this image on one of my many trips to Phipps Conservatory. I hope you enjoy sharing the beauty of nature. I have really enjoyed sharing it with you for the past month. I appreciate all the nice comments and all the friends who have followed me all month. Maybe I will start another 30 days soon.

Hello Facebook friends. Well, here we are at day #28 in my 30 days of images. I love the flower and butterfly theme because they are happy and give us a close up look at the beauty of nature. I wanted to do something fresh and new so a few days ago, I went into the backyard to see what I could find. I loved this image so tonight I went into the digital darkroom to process it. I hope you like it as much as I do.
