GLORY OF THE IMMORTAL//
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools”
Romans 1:20-23
Nature is an exhibit show of the greatest artist’s work. All around us the most magnificent pieces of design and works of art are on display communicating to humanity the aspects of Him that can only be known through creating and creation. Art’s purpose is said to be expression. God himself has designed an atmosphere that He might express himself to us. We can meet God in the rustle of the leaves, the chirps of the insects, and the drip of the dew. We can meet God in the spider’s weaving, the bee’s pollination, and the ant’s building.
For God built this world, for us to be with him, and yet even in a visual exclamation of his omnipotence and divinity we turn our backs on his gift instead celebrating in our man-made design achievements.
In this piece, I attempted to encapsulate the movement of the natural world that God reveals himself to us in through the complementary contrasts of geometric patterns, and organic motions visually referencing honey dripping from its comb or water dripping down jagged stones. I also sought to allude to the growth of blooming buds and sproutings pods through the base of my hanging sculpture.
I chose sewing as my primary tool of structure as well as used it as an aspect of my design due to it being itself a natural element. As the bird weaves its nest and the spider spins its web I also wanted to use my choice of adheisive as a visual part of the movement in my piece.
